Summary: If I was going to buy another BD drive, I would have serious look at the others.
Pros: Works very well. All formats and BD functionality. Nice solid mechanics.
Cons: Seemed to overheat or become unstable after prolonged use. Updating the firmware (which was very easy) seemed to fix 95% of that. It can still overheat if you go BD after BD, and you just have to shut down the computer and let it cool.
Summary: At one point, my BD drive stopped working. When I took it out I heard something rattling around in it. I forced the tray open and a piece fell out! On a whim I re-installed it and it's been working perfectly well ever since.
Summary: I am looking at buying this burner. VLC just added Blu-ray player capability in their VLC 2.0. release. Please, would someone download it (Free) and test to see if it plays blu-ray on this Sony unit. (www videolan org). Please try your burns and store bought blu-rays.
Summary: Why can't they make a drive with a snap on bezel that would come with beige and silver spares? Charge $5.00 more. We went through this nonsense with stereo equipment. Black shows fingerprints too readily. You can't get a beige monitor anymore either.
Pros: It works. I have not tried burning yet, but it loaded Win 7 fine. (Even after I took it apart!).
Cons: It's not Beige. In fact you cannot find a beige blue ray burner, or a silver one either. Why is that?
Summary: So they are saying that the OEM is set in stone and if you want a upgradeable firmware one get the Retail version (BWU-500S) one that comes with software. Makes no sense to me then why do they have the firmware for the 5300S, but you can't update it says "no device found" and the version is 2.0 on...
Pros: Nice unit hooked up Win7 automatically installed it, Seems to pick up all disc i throw at it so far. Know of 4+ software's that work with this unit and most have 30-day trials. 1.Cyberlink PowerDvD11 pro (DVI, HDMI outs only!) 2.ArcSoft Total Media 5 (VGA, DVI, HDMI outs) 3.Corel WinDvD Pro (DVI,...
Cons: Cannot update firmware at all per Sony (eu) site: Also note that our firmware updates are not compatible with those provided by OEM vendors (Sony Optiarc drives pre-installed by the PC manufacturers e.g. HP, Dell, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Apple etc.). You may damage your drive if you flash it w...
Summary: Haven't tried playing a blu-ray movie yet, that's next. Don't expect troubles tho.
Pros: Using it in a home PC Win7x64. Works fine, just made a backup blu-ray disk of some folders using Ashampoo Studio 11...wrote OK but Ashampoo failed on the verify, so I'm verifying with WinMerge. So far so good I think the test blu-ray disk wrote OK.
Cons: Couldn't update the firmware. Ran BPS5_104WIN.exe but it said it couldn't find the device. Changed the ATAPI controllers from DMA as the Sony FAQ suggested but still no go. Oddly Nero's InfoTool reports it has fw 2.0 while the latest fw update is 1.04. So 1 egg removed for the confusion.
Summary: If you don't need to remove the front panel, then this product will do what it should. I have not burned any DVDs with it yet... but it reads everything fine.
Pros: Works well like it should.
Cons: The cheapest DVD/CD/BlueRay ROM I have ever held in my hand. It was going into my HTPC which has it's own front plate... but you can not take the front plate off of this ROM. I did manage to somehow put it into the case... it works but the button is a bit hard to press since the front HTPC panel ...
