Summary: If I was going to buy another BD drive, I would have serious look at the others.
Pros: Works very well. All formats and BD functionality. Nice solid mechanics.
Cons: Seemed to overheat or become unstable after prolonged use. Updating the firmware (which was very easy) seemed to fix 95% of that. It can still overheat if you go BD after BD, and you just have to shut down the computer and let it cool.
Summary: At one point, my BD drive stopped working. When I took it out I heard something rattling around in it. I forced the tray open and a piece fell out! On a whim I re-installed it and it's been working perfectly well ever since.
Summary: I am looking at buying this burner. VLC just added Blu-ray player capability in their VLC 2.0. release. Please, would someone download it (Free) and test to see if it plays blu-ray on this Sony unit. (www videolan org). Please try your burns and store bought blu-rays.
Summary: Loading tray always closed very noisily. Began to not read discs, BD/DVDs, more frequently. Purchased from NewEgg in September 2011 and stopped reading discs in February 2012. Worst optical disc drive I have EVERY owned. Will be testing Sony's return policy.
Cons: This is not specific to this drive, but a comment that no manufacturer will get more than a 3 out of me until they quit putting more logos than a NASCAR racer on the front of what is supposed to be a plain black drive going into my media center. When I can simply install the product without takin...
Summary: As other people have mentioned, you need software to watch movies on your system. This product, being OEM, does not come with the necessary software, so you either have to know workarounds, or buy the software separately.
Pros: Pretty quiet. Easy installation. No clicking noises.
