LOUD!

Cell Out "Peter", Amazon
28 April 2014
  • Summary: I brought this product for 2 reasons. One was to install my mother board drivers and the other was price. As everyone stated it does not come with wires but luckily my power supply did. Simple to install but wow is this thing loud. I used it twice so far and I doubt I will use again after yesterday.

Not One of Sony's Best Products

Bill B., Newegg
7 February 2013
  • Pros: It fits the drive bay and responds to commands. Most of the time it will work.
  • Cons: The error rate when reading from a DVD that had been burned with a Linux ISO image seemed rather high. During installation, I used the Linux installer's built in media checker and got errors on the first try. I ejected and reloaded the medium and then it past the integrity check. I've had similar...

User Review

Renhao Z., Newegg
21 September 2012
  • Summary: Given that this drive won't be used much except for loading software every once in a while. The infrequent use won't impact my overall system experience. However, I find it disappointing a good drive can't be made cheaply without incurring such a drastic hit in terms of user comfort.
  • Pros: drive works pretty well with all the pressed CD/DVDs I've tried. All the CD-Rs I've tried, some of which were burned years ago, also have no issues.
  • Cons: I have never heard a drive that is so unbelievably *LOUD* once it has spun up to full speed. I find it hard to even enjoy the casual movie from my DVD collection using this drive.

OK but...

Gerard C., Newegg
22 July 2012
  • Summary: LiteOn, Asus, LG, Samsung all better deals for the money. Unless you need a white faceplate.
  • Pros: Works and its white
  • Cons: Drive door sticks a little bit, sounds loud and like its going to self destruct.

It does the job

PhillyJQ, Amazon
4 December 2013
  • Summary: I bought the Sony DVD-Ram Drive because it can read (burn? I don't know because I've never tried to do that) my collection of Panasonic Ram-disks, along with just about everything else (unfortunately, however, the Ram disks have to be removed from their protective cartridge).
