Earlier this year, I reviewed one of Samsung's first "Super-Multi" drives, the SH-S162L. While affordably priced, the drive offered a good mix of features and performance. With the SH-S182D, Samsung has brought much of the same to the table. However, they've upped the ante, adding things like 18x DVD±R and 12x DVD-RAM writing speeds. While welcome additions, there were a few performance aspects that kept the SH-S182D from getting top marks in our review. Read more

Samsung's SH-S182D is the first 18x DVD writer we've seen at PC Pro, and our tests saw it reach an impressive 18.2x towards the outer edge of our DVD+R disc, giving it an unprecedented average burning speed of 13.2x. This impressive burning rate meant that a full 4.7GB single-layer DVD+R burned in a little over five-and-a-half minutes. Read more

It's been some time now since we tested the world's first 18X burner from Plextor and now again we had the opportunity to put another 18X burner through its paces, the SH-S182D from Samsung. The drive supports the high DVD±R DL writing speed of 8X and the newest 12X DVD-RAM media. At 48X reading speed with CD media in comparison to other drives, we found the SH-S182D a good reader, probably the fastest out there, with a more than capable CD error correction mechanism.
