Summary: From my experience, when i first used this drive the tray would not coming out when you press the button. Tried this when plugged into the computer about 20 times. .. It makes a spinning noise and then doesn't do anything. i had to put a small pin like a paper clip into the small ejection hole that you see in all CD drives. It allowed the tray to come out. I then tested the ejection of the drive multiple times there after and it seemed to have fixed the stuck tray.
Summary: I had to get a new optical disc drive. My old 1st generation Mac mini bit ths dust and my new Mac mini doesn't come with one. I did some online comparasion shopping and found this one. It had a lot of favorable reviews on several different websites including here (thanks, "Farscape 1"!). I reserved it from MicroCenter.com and picked it up at one of their local Chicago area stores (that's cool being able to do that BTW).
Summary: I bought this for my girlfriends macbook air because a class she takes uses cd software. Reading the description I had thought it was just a 1 usb device but in fact it says on the packaging that it should be used with 2 connections. That was a problem for the macbook air bc it only has 2 usb ports and they are on opposite sides of the computer. I took a chance and used a single usb cable to see if it would work and it has been working just fine.
Summary: It's a great DVD burner for the price. It does require 2 usb ports because the DRIVE itself does not have a power supply. Very light and portable. Its so light that when the drive is open, it tends to tip forward. It is so slim that it can be put anywhere. I do think the plastic is a bit flimsy so make sure nothing is placed on top. I actually leave mine on top of my mac Mini, and it blends in nicely. Only 4 out of 5 because it doesn't have its own power supply.
Summary: I bought this external drive to use with my MacBook Air (mid-2011). Plug it in to your USB port, and it just works, no installation necessary. Speed is good, everything works as advertised. As for negatives, the build construction is not the best, as much of the shell is thin plastic, but it's good enough for my purposes. Kind of a weird shape, which makes it slightly less portable. Considering the money you save over buying Apple's external drive, I highly recommend it.
Summary: I bought this burner as a replacement for my apple superdrive. Nothing wrong with the superdrive but I expect that it will quit working soon since I use it A LOT. Anyway, I was looking for a cheaper alternative and this was definitely less costly. The device is bulkier than the superdrive but is capable of all the same things in terms of reading discs and writing to discs.
