Worthless Software

Mark K., Newegg
19 July 2013
  • Summary: This is the last time I will pay the extra money for a "Plextor". It's just a name that you pay for. Plextor sucks because they have associated themselves with a zhitty software company.
  • Pros: It does a great job burning DVDs and BluRays.
  • Cons: The CyberLink Power DVD software that comes with this unit is total c r a p. It will not play BluRay discs. It keeps saying you need to upgrade. When you go to CyberLinks web site they want you to pay $79.00 so you can play BluRay discs. What good is paying $225.00 for a Plextor BluRay burner/pla...

1) Expensive, 2) Software isn't a full version?

Bradley B., Newegg

  • Summary: ...Good thing I have a PS3.
  • Pros: Worked for playing the blueray video, but...
  • Cons: ...the packaged CyberLink PowerDVD isn't a full version, so I have to watch my bluerays without sound. That's cool. Spend $150 on the drive and can't use it without paying another $75 for the unlock key? ZZZ...

Another great Plextor product, but...

  • Pros: I have been using Plextor for years, back in the very beginning when CD burners first showed up in the market. I've burned thousands of discs and have only had a handful fail. I got this one to replace my stock Plextor 755SA which finally bit the dust last week after nearly 5 years of use, and de...
  • Cons: Cyberlink!!! It's a huge, huge, huge con, but not enough to knock it down an egg. And it uses an older version of it!! Really, how can they have such a great drive and include such lackluster software? The bad thing is I've bought Plextor drives before and they've included Roxio (blech) instead o...

Works Well

Wesley D., Newegg
3 June 2011
  • Summary: This was for a new system and I am pleased. I only used it a little, as I was able to create ISO images of the HW items' DVDs on the old system when waiting for the last item to arrive (Vertex 3).
  • Pros: I bought it for reading and very little writing. Heck, I have a media system with a hard drive so burning disks is ... a less used option as my pioneer in-dash GPS unit can take disks as well as SD and thumb drives. So I burn some disks just to make a quick mood change (rock to classical) without...
  • Cons: The Cyberlink software is good but ... not so good. It installs too much "I will not be unloaded" SW. I run win 7 64 and finally found out why the start menu icons, which I do not want cluttering up the root of the Start Menu, kept coming back. Found the perps hiding out in HKLM-Wow6432 Run. Dele...

Read BEFORE you Write

Daniel C., Newegg
4 May 2011
  • Pros: This is a msg to Themolits or whatever, The statment that the Plextor is a rebranded product is not at issue, your stating that the Pioneer doesn't support BD-R is absolutely WRONG and idiotic, there is another twit that says that the drive doesn't support BD-R DL which is another statment that i...

Rated the best for a reason

Michael A., Newegg
6 January 2011
  • Summary: I have rarely bought a product in the past that performs to tester's specifications. Obviously those of us at home don't always have ideal situations, hardware, etc., to emulate the experts.
  • Pros: Fast and dependable. I don't always believe the magazines, but in this case they were right on. There is a reason why this drive receives the accolades it garners. Plextor has been making drives for a short time in comparison to big names but they are doing it right in my opinion.
  • Cons: None yet, but I will be sure to update if there are any

Good drive, horrible support

John D., Newegg
8 October 2010
  • Summary: Paying extra for this Pioneer drive rebranded as Plextor is starting to seem a little bit like paying $50 to get kicked in the shin.
  • Pros: Works fine while it worked.
  • Cons: Plextor's RMA process is horrible. Despite saying you can complete it by email, they require you to phone in. Then, didn't reply for over a week despite several calls and messages. When they did reply, they only sent the RMA form, and not the address to which to return the drive. At this rate, th...

No blues

Susan P., Newegg
9 September 2010
  • Summary: Hopefully, the 50gb blanks will come down from their 10 dollar sticker soon.
  • Pros: Absolutely no problems installing, quiet and quick. Bundled software a plus. Able to make 25gb permanent backups for only one dollar.
  • Cons: Maybe more expensive than the cut-rate ones.

Best Bang for your Bucks

Anonymous, Newegg
9 June 2010
  • Summary: Great Products supplied by a great supplier Newegg
  • Pros: I tried the Samsung, then the Pioneer and almost went for the LG but didn't. I read a few articles about different blu ray burners and companies and this is what I bought and I am truly thankful. The product not only ships with a working copy of Cyberlink BD suite version 8 but it works. I found ...
  • Cons: Only that it's not cheaper. But you pay for what you get
