Reliable

Joel S., Newegg
22 September 2012
  • Summary: I bought this because the second combo drive replaced in my laptop caved as usual. The built in combo drives in almost every laptop are HL-DT-ST DVDRAM and they are junk. This is good old Plextor. They have always made very good reliable equipment. I have so far burnt DVD +R, -R, +R DL, and cd's.
  • Pros: Easy to use/setup. Burns just about anything. Solid. Slim. Quiet
  • Cons: Cable connector in back of unit is not solid and if not plugged in securely will cause the unit to connect/disconnect in windows. Blue power light at back stopped working almost immediately. With door completely extended it is a little front heavy. Although advertised as able to burn dual layer D...

The King is dead...

Gregory K., Newegg
15 December 2011
  • Summary: Plextor used to be the king of the hill. I don't know if they go bought out but they're garbage now. Makes me sad as I like to stick with a brand.
  • Pros: Feels solid. Looks fantastic.
  • Cons: Skips if you look at it. Fails to rip disks. Fails to burn disks. Heavy.

Excellent!

Justin V., Newegg
6 July 2011
  • Summary: Convenience and fast!
  • Pros: Fast setup. Took literally 15-20 seconds to have it setup. Have burned over 75 verbatim dvd+rs without any failed disc yet.
  • Cons: loading the disc isn't easy compared to an internal burner. the tray is flimsy and requires a little push to get the disc loaded.

Solid

Anonymous, Newegg
14 May 2010
  • Pros: *Perfect solution for quick, no-hassle server and netbook OS installs. Recognized at POST on all Dell PowerEdge servers and Inspiron netbooks I've used it on. *Solid construction. Well placed blue-LED power indicator on the top right hand corner. *Portable, powered thru the provided 24" USB cable...
  • Cons: *Gloss black finish gets dirty with fingerprints quickly but is boxed with a cleaning cloth. Not a big deal but I prefer a matte finish. *Cheesey purple crushed velvet sleeve collects debris out of the box.

Does its job

Terri N., Newegg
15 March 2010
  • Summary: Short cord, but any A/B USB cable will work. So, I borrowed one off a printer to use in a situation that required a longer cable.
  • Pros: Worked great. Has been recognized by all PCs. ***Recognized by all servers I've used it on for initial installations. Very nice.
  • Cons: None.

  • Pros: Quiet, fast. Nice unit. I am updating my review.
  • Cons: First one had grinding noises and read errors.

User Review

V.Paul Y., Newegg
23 January 2010
  • Summary: Will update when I get a functional replacement. Resurrection of daughter's Acer One will have to wait.
  • Pros: Looks good.
  • Cons: Had check errors with several cd's from the start. Checked cd's on several other drives with no problems. The problem follows this drive. Also makes unusual noises. Looks like replacement policy will add time and shipping costs to the already high price.

Great and reliable

Zhenya J., Newegg
18 December 2009
  • Summary: Buy if you prefer small portable and reliable DVD burner.
  • Pros: Quiet and smooth, only need one USB to operate. Works well with my netbook. Reliable drive by Plextor. My last Plextor lasted more than 3 years with quite regular DVD burning.
  • Cons: Expensive

Great Drive

Michael D., Newegg
26 October 2009
  • Pros: Good, fast drive. Works great under Fedora 11 Linux. I didn't have to install drivers or anything, just plugged in the drive and popped in a DVD and it worked great!
  • Cons: None so far.
