Summary: I bought this to replace the failed original CD/DVD drive in my Pismo Powerbook. I picked it in part because it's basically the same drive as Apple has used in some of it's newer laptops (they used the slot-loading variant).
Pros: Not too noisy, reads and writes CDs and DVDs without any issues.
Summary: This drive is rated as being capable of 8x reading on double layer DVD-ROMs but in my experience it barely made it to 6x. I replaced it with a Samsung (also purchased from Newegg), the new drive is nearly 30 percent faster, though noticably louder which is acceptable to me for the added speed.
Pros: Quiet, competent DVD burner. Worked in Dell Inspiron 700m.
Cons: Extremely poor DVD ripper, less then zero support on Pioneer's website. Good luck even finding this product on Pioneer's website, I searched for hours but could not find a single firmware update or technical support site dedicated to supporting this product with information and updates.
Cons: I got this with an Acer laptop. It will not read, write or even see DVD's. It worked fine up until a month ago. Since then, I've been looking for information and contacted customer support for both Pioneer and Acer, both gave me the same solution but both didn't work. There's no information onlin...

Excerpt: bought this product the other day and have been very impressed with it so far. every copied disk works perfect with no crashing or faults. simple to install, just removing one screw from the laptop, sliding the old drive out, removing the screw catch and screwing that onto the back of the new drive.
