3 years later!!

Kevin W., Newegg
3 November 2011
  • Summary: at the time of purchase, it was the fastest external dvd burner out there. originally bought it to do massive dvd copying for a school project, which it did flawlessly and very quickly.
  • Pros: quiet slim matches my laptop low power consumption (when not burning or light scribing) fast!
  • Cons: blue led, though not bright, can be slightly annoying to some, but its better than having it in the front blinding you in the face i guess. the finish can get worn off (to be expected after so many years and so many uses though) could use a little vertical stand, use less desk space, but that's m...

This made it to market?

Joshua M., Newegg
5 October 2010
  • Summary: This drive is useless especially if paired with a netbook or ultraportable. This thing for the life of it will NOT boot from anything before windows starts. You can even manually choose the drive as the boot source. The light will blink and the drive with power itself off.
  • Pros: I is usb powered
  • Cons: 1. Constantly disconnects 2. Slow read time 3. Only worked 3 times before issues started 4. Will not load from a disk outside of windows (Including system recovery disks and operating system disks) 5. Randomly refuses to power upon system startup

Does not work as advertised

David L., Newegg
21 June 2010
  • Summary: Just go with something else. Even their firmware upgrade tool rejects the drive. Should not have bought it at a less return friendly retailer.
  • Pros: Cheap. Can read some disks. Only uses USB power, no need to carry a power brick.
  • Cons: Does not work as advertised. Does not read Memorex Lightscribe media. Mixed results with other media. If blank or previously burned lightscribe disk is inserted, drive locks up. Burn success rate 50%, lower if using iTunes. If it locks up, you need to reset. I've let it sit an hour, and it doesn'...

Lite-On makes great stuff!

Stephen J., Newegg
3 March 2010
  • Summary: I have used Lite-On for years and it is a Quality Product.
  • Pros: Works as advertized. Now my laptop can burn direct to disk w/ two CD drives. Using Nero Burner software and LightScribe; I'm making my own labels and templates; no more hand written CD names. They look so professional! It's so easy to do! I love that it works without a seperate power supply! Grea...

Worked for 3 months

Andrew M., Newegg
17 February 2010
  • Pros: Worked fine for 3 months under Mac OSX. Could not get it to burn a complete lightscribe image under newly rebuild Windows XP system.
  • Cons: After 3 months it would not power up. Took forever to get the drive replaced, had to pay my own shipping to Lite-on. Replacement drive is also dead. Lite-on customer service = not the best.

You gotta be joking me!

Anonymous, Newegg

  • Summary: Lite-On has always stood for quality. Someone at the factory really messed up on this one.
  • Pros: Small footprint - works - period!
  • Cons: Are you kidding me? The supplied USB cable is only seven (yup - 7) inches long! Unless you plan on holding the drive next to your computer while it's plugged in - it won't be! Hope you have a spare mini USB/Male USB cable.

Follow Up Review

Bill D., Newegg
22 January 2010
  • Summary: Always, always test your Newegg purchased gear within the applicable time for exercise of the 30 day return privilege. I dealt with the maufacturer, and they supplied a replacement unit-- with exactly the same problem, so caveat emptor.
  • Pros: As per my prior review: Compact size, usb- powered, quiet, fairly quick spin up, abiliity to add LightScribe capabilities to laptop, seems to work with many different media
  • Cons: As per my prior review: My unit will not read or write to the data side of Verbatim CD-R or Memorex CD-R media... It does burn Lightscribe labels to those media. The problem was with the data side of Lightscribe media only. Unit would record fine to non Lightscribe media.

Work Horse

Robert B., Newegg
15 January 2010
  • Pros: This DVD writer works great. Very quick and rarely has a bad disk. Comes with Nero 8. The light scribe function is fantastic. Get some light scribe DVDs and you won't be disappointed.
  • Cons: Light scribe does take some time. On high quality it can take over 20 minutes.
