Summary: This drive seems to not be for beginners, needs firmware update. Software can be unresponsive. If this is your first time getting a blu ray drive go for an LG. Nero blu ray player works just fine with this.
Pros: Low cost. Comes region free. I got 3 of these drives only one came with power dvd bd 10. Power bd 10 is great very responsive and fast.
Cons: Only some come with power dvd 10 bd. Doesnt burn ANYTHING lol. Reads everything.
Summary: Didn't bother inserting install disc - was unnecessary, Win 7x64 Ultimate handled installation smoothly and I already have Blu-ray player software as mentioned previously. The disc does however contain firmware update for Win 8 compatibility so don't just throw it out if you have 8, but then again...
Pros: Price and quality. Plays all Blu-rays and other discs properly. Burns DVDs quickly with no probs. I have PowerDVD 11 and 12 on various computers and this unit plays Blu rays with both those software products flawlessly. Also burns Blu-ray to DVD well. And of course the biggest pro is NewEgg custo...
Summary: I loathe the bundled cripplware that comes with optical drives so this is the ideal solution - cheaper drive, no software. If don't want to mess with VLC then look at WinDVD. In the end, you'll likely tire of the bundled crippleware with the other drives anyways.
Pros: Why pay double or triple this price for Blu-Ray? If you need to playback blu-ray get this and VLC and you are set. You need to add a few extras to VLC to get it work but it does.
Cons: As everyone has said, it doesn't come with software (that's why it's OEM and cheap!) Use VLC if you won't to pay for BR player software. http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name - go here once you have VLC installed.
Summary: Windows 8 [Pro] doesn't include DVD or Blu-ray decoders out of the box. I believe you have to purchase the Windows Media Center add-on from Microsoft for that. Other reviewers deduct eggs for that, but it's not Lite-On's fault!
Pros: Reads most CDs and DVDs at a decent speed. While it's not really fast, I can't complain at this price. I installed Windows 8 from this drive with no issues. Other reviewers must be using an old motherboard.
Cons: I've been able to read both stamped and burned discs, except one Verbatim DVD-R burned by a colleague. Another DVD-ROM drive did read that disc. I tried updating the firmware, which did not fix it. The firmware updater must be installed. There is no uninstaller so plan on additional bloat in the ...
Summary: This is not my only drive I have installed and was not installed as a primary drive.. In my setup I like speed over functions so If I have only really fast drive to read discs and another drive that offers the ability to read multiple discs I am happy.
Pros: PRICE!! Its Blu-Ray.. New Technology that allows me to watch my movies with out my PS3
Cons: Slower speeds than my 4 year old DVDRW/CDRW on reading discs..
Summary: Since PCs and Macs can't play Blu-Rays out of the box, you will need to download some software to play your movies. I downloaded VLC and a patch for it and played TRON:Legacy and The Dark Knight fine.
Pros: - Easy to install - Cheap - Plays Blu-Rays
Cons: - None, if you understand what you are getting.
