Summary: Great drive for the price. Lots of Pro's as listed above. By Lite-On over the same Asus drive and other re-branded drive as you will get the upgrades only with the Lite-On model even though the other re-badged drives are the same physical drive.
Pros: 1) Purchased the same model in the past and is still running today. 2) Good Price 3) These drives a upgradeable via Firmware 4) Lite-on comes out with firmware upgrades on a regular basis unlike many other companies 5) The Asus DRW-24B1ST and many other drives are actually made by Lite-On and is the same physical drive. The advantage of buying this model again is the firmware upgrade. Asus uses the same Lite-On drive but puts its name on them. Asus also uses its own f...
Cons: This drive was DOA, the tray wouldn't open. I have bought a few thousand $$$ of merchandise from Newegg.com over the past (aprox) 10+ years and this is the first time I've recieved something DOA so not bad odds.
Cons: I bought two at once for an install. Both are going in the trash. They will not burn to speed regardless of settings. Render a dvd at 1.75 speed? I traded cables, sata ports and even tried other programs and zippo.....nothing helped. These things are slower than slow. I even tried four different brands of dvds, the results were the same. One brand (16x) even refused to try to burn at 16x but would try at 8x still my other internal drive had no problem to burn my test ...
Pros: I have been buying these (and the previous version) for several years and have never had one fail. They never seem to make coasters and are fast and quiet - I don't know what else I could ask for.
Summary: This inexpensive 24X optical drive performs perfectly. I used it in a mid-tower new build with Windows 8.1 and I am happy with the results. You can spend a lot more money on other drives, but you can get the same results with Lite-On. I have been using the drive on a daily basis for several weeks now and have only good results to report. The enclosure is dust and moisture proof too.
Summary: I bought five of these to replace some aging drives in a tower duplicator. I've been using them for a few weeks now and have burned about an average of 1,000 discs on each. They work as expected but they are somewhat louder during initial spin-up than the Toshiba/Samsungs they were replacing. In my environment that isn't an issue. Still for the price they can't be beat.
