Summary: We bought this because it was high on the hardware compatibility list for m-disks, a 25GB capacity disk with a special compostion for long-term data storage. So far has completely lived up to expectations.
Summary: The Blu-ray disc look extremely sharp on my monitor. I have seen the difference in stores for years, but wasn't sure how it would look on my system. Looks great!
Pros: The Blu-ray player does work. It works just perfectly fine.
Cons: My lack of knowledge, I guess. I would have thought that Windows 7 Media Center or Windows Media Player 12 would have the capability to play Blu-ray disc. Not so. Apparently since Microsoft lost the battle of HD movie disc- they did not want to support playing the competition's format. I had to download some software to play the Blu-ray movies that I picked up at Redbox. It took me three tries to download a player that wasn't chalked full of bloatware! Took me another...
Pros: Burner installed (SATA cable) easily and Windows 7 Home Pro recognized drive. Some said the firmware should be flashed. I burnt a dvd and Bluray w/no problem. You will need software to watch blu rays on your pc if you don't have it yet, Windows media will play dvd's no problem. Blu ray actually burnt faster than dvd!? Either way, no problem so far but did buy the extended 2 year warranty just in case. Would recommend.
Pros: Got it at a good price. I was able to get it working on Linux within a reasonable amount of time.
Cons: Seems to be broken within 6 months. I bought the drive around November of last year. About a month ago it decided it wasn't going to read or even recognize a disc in the drive. I am not certain as to what the problem is but after a month of debugging my last thought is to replace the drive. It no longer will work with my Ubuntu system, I made no changes or updates that I can attribute the drive failure too either.
Summary: Needed a BD burner to replace a USB 2.0 powered unit that apparently croaked due to power issues. Wanted something a lot more robust, so assembled this LG drive in a USB 3.0 5.25" enclosure. MUCH faster BD ripping than my old drive! Have not yet burnt a BD-RE but my Win7 system recognizes the blanks in this drive.
Pros: Good functionality, especially at this price point.
Cons: None so far, but I haven't put mine through a lot of stress.
Summary: I hope my experience with the first drive was a fluke as I have had bad burners in the past and really lived to regret purchasing them. New drive should be here soon as the egg covered my return cost and is making good on the purchase.
Pros: Was fast...
Cons: Lasted about a week while working fine and then up and quit. Short of beating on it with a hammer I tried everything to get it going again, but to no avail.
