Summary: I have a Win7 Home Premium box sitting next to the XP one the drive is in now, and was toying with the idea of moving the drive to it until today. In preparation, I flashed the 2.00 firmware to the drive (available since September(?); what are ppl kvetching about??). OOPS!
Pros: Worked well out of the box. Have had it in a Vista Home Premium (previous) and an XP Pro SP3 box (current), and have been happy with it's ability to rip and record in each. Speed is good, and all of the write-once media I've tried have played ok in retail BD players from Samsung, Panasonic and So...
Cons: Just a beef - why can't they speed up writing on RW media? A 50GB Sony takes freakin' forever!! 25GB Ricoh and Verbatim aren't much better. Looks like nobody is doing anything better, even five months later, so I won't dock an egg for this...
Summary: I spent time and Verbatim discs both Blu-ray and DVD to get this drive running right. Come to find it was my nForce4 IDE ATAPI controller. Once I uninstalled those drivers and used the default Microsoft drivers everything worked fine. Since then, I've successfully burned all media without a problem.
Pros: Very quiet drive, looks nice
Cons: Drive isn't compatible with nForce4 on my Asus A8N-SLI Premium motherboard. Wasted quite a few Verbatim Blu-ray discs and Verbatim DVD discs which was no fault by Verbatim.
Summary: Hope this information is helpful to everyone.
Pros: Writes Bluray and can be used in a Vantec NexStar DX 5.25in Enclosure, USB 2.0, eSATA so it can be used with a laptop. I still haven't figured our how to burn my HD home movies to BD-RE so that my PS3 can read them. Overall a good drive.
Cons: The disk that comes with the drive does not download the firmware necessary for the drive to work with Windows 7 and the USA and Canada LG sites do not have this firmware. You can get it on the au.lgservice.com website (yes, that is the Australia website). Search under DVD writers for WH08LS20. A...
Summary: To Vissy, try Googling and you will find firmware although you will have to use Google Translate on the webpage. To quote what I found: you have to read the LG forum firmware announce thread. Goto http://www.lgservice.co.kr/SearchSddr.laf and type BH08 in the search field.
Summary: Ordered this drive and a few days later it broke, newegg wouldn't let me RMA it because I threw away the box it came in (that is more my fault because their RMA policy is very clearly spelled out) Had to send it to the manufacturer, the new one is great, but it was very annoying to go through all...
Pros: 2nd drive works great.
Cons: first drive died after a few days of use. made an awful clicking noise, and staled my computer up anytime i tried to access it.
Summary: Mine came firmly wrapped in bubble wrap and packed nice and tight in a box. It didn't come with software or cable like others have mentioned, just whats pictured on the site. It did come with a package of screws. Very nice drive.
Pros: This is a very quiet drive in both BD and DVD modes. The drive is longer than a regular DVD drive by about 1/2 inch. So make sure you keep that in mind. Actual depth is 7 1/8 inches. Windows 7 installed the drive with no problems. Burns 8X dvd media at 10-16X and burns 4X media at 8X. So its a ni...
Summary: Microsoft does not support COPP on Windows XPx64 making it impossible to play copy protected blu-ray. (not specific to this drive) It works on XP (32 bit) after getting all the HDCP complaint hardware and drivers set-up.
Pros: Came with software, SATA cable, SATA power adapter. Successfully burned 5 blu-ray data disks with no coasters. (only coasters was from software incompatability with ghost.)
Cons: LG Firmware utility does not work in Windows XPx64 as is.
Summary: Only posting so soon after purchasing to try and help those who also bought the OEM version. No software, cables, or anything else came with the drive and none were expected since its is OEM. I'm using Windows Vista 64bit and the drive basicaly was plug and play. Windows identified it right off.
Pros: Cheap on Black Friday. Good picture (haven't attempted to burn anything yet.
Cons: Drive not listed on LG's website so there is no manual or any support files that can be pulled up from their site for this drive. Not really a con but a reminder to make sure the monitor and graphics card you use are HDCP compliant. I'm using two graphic cards in SLI with no problems.
