Good value

Ian C., Newegg
10 July 2013
  • Summary: Despite the problems above and the 3 egg rating, I do actually like this drive- I don't see myself using it all that much to do anything but rip new CDs, watch movies and emulate old playstation games, but it works precisely as intended.
  • Pros: Does what it says it does. It read and writes DVDs, and is capable of reading blu-ray.
  • Cons: As stated in other reviews, it's not capable out of the box of actually doing anything with blu-ray. I'm still testing out different programs to find one that's optimum for this.

Good drive. Beware riplock

Richard B., Newegg
29 June 2013
  • Pros: I got this drive for backing up my movie collection.
  • Cons: Riplock is a form of DRM stuck in the drives firmware that limits the speed at which you can access data on a disc.

Carved in Stone?

Anthony N., Newegg
29 May 2013
  • Pros: Purchased it for 1 reason, and thats M-Disk. Want my photos, all 10 gigabytes to last in a safe without degradation and thats what this drive is meant for.
  • Cons: Dual layer & M-Disk BR will be out soon so the drive will be obsolete before it's 1st birthday.

Nice, Inexpensive Drive.

Ben R., Newegg
4 March 2013
  • Summary: This is where it gets interesting. I bought this drive having no knowledge of Sony's completely obnoxious digital rights management on their BluRay technology. Since this drive is an OEM, that means it doesn't come with software, which normally isn't a huge deal for media drives. If you buy this drive, and it will play your DVDs, but won't play your BluRays, that means you don't have the required software to play said BluRays.
  • Pros: The drive works well so far, it's read speed is good, and it's write speed is decent for the price, and it looks good in my case.
  • Cons: None so far.

Blue Ray OEM (bare) Optical Drive

Jeffrey L., Newegg
7 February 2013
  • Summary: Why are open/close buttons always below the drawer? When the drawer is open, the button is hard to see and reach.
  • Pros: Works right out of the box, no issues, no problems. No drivers required, no software to install.
  • Cons: No manual, no paperwork of any kind included. You better be confident in what you are doing. The open/close button is very discrete, a little hard to see.

LG Blu Ray Drive

Andrew W., Newegg
7 January 2013
  • Summary: It's still working, and will be a 5 star item unless it does break sooner than one would expect.
  • Pros: Allowed me to install windows 8 from an optical disc. It plays DVDs.
  • Cons: doesn't come with a SATA cable, or software.*

User Review

Joseph H., Newegg
11 December 2012
  • Summary: Nice drive with some colorful character for a great price. I'd definitely recommend it.
  • Pros: Great price
  • Cons: When reading data discs at top speed, however, this thing sounds like a jet engine.

Good Drive

Gregori L., Newegg
4 December 2012
  • Summary: A good little drive. I would purchase again but remember you need to get some kind of software to allow your PC to play BluRays since it is not built into windows or any free video player (at the time of this writing 12/04/2012)
  • Pros: Plays Blu-Rays, DVDs, and CDs
  • Cons: Doesn't come with any software to play BluRay discs (though this was expected)
