Spend your hard-earned dollars elsewhere

Lyle W., Newegg
6 February 2009
  • Summary: I thought it was my media (Taiyo Yuden CD's, Verbatim and TDK DVD's) until I realized it wouldn't even read media burned by the unit itself. I definitely got a bad one, and am not willing to try another of the same model or brand. Oh, and I gave it one egg because it's impossible to give 0 eggs.
  • Pros: USB bus powered; thin and lightweight; makes wonderful coasters, both DVD and CD
  • Cons: just flat-out doesn't burn anything

  • Cons: Very light weight. cheap plastic body. Worked exactly once. Sent it back with no hassle from NewEgg.

Excellent Burner

Anonymous, Newegg
28 January 2009
  • Summary: I use this with my eeePC 1000h, since it didn't have an optical drive built in.
  • Pros: Burner is as small as you could expect and fits well in a pouch in my laptop bag. Using USB for both data and power is a good solution when on the road, provided you have enough free USB ports. Burns as quickly as an internal burner on a minitower. Looks pretty sleek to boot.
  • Cons: Can get a little bit noisy when running at full speed, but seems to be a bit quieter than a lot of full size models that I've come across.

Works as described

Anonymous, Newegg
13 January 2009
  • Summary: Fiance loves it and her little computer.
  • Pros: Don't need to carry around a power cord. Gets all power from USB cord(s). If you are burning, just plug in the second USB cord for extra power.
  • Cons: Silly thing is the same size as the 8.9" Acer Aspire One that I bought it for. But I knew it would be that way. I just think it's funny.

  • Summary: Got this for an eeePC 1000H. plug and plays great. Will drain the battery fast so be careful or plug in your laptop to the wall especially if you have an power eater.
  • Pros: works fine thus far.
  • Cons: drains your laptop battery faster than expected.

Nice burner

Thomas J., Newegg
16 December 2008
  • Pros: Good drive. No power supply needed.
  • Cons: Needs 2 usb ports for some uses. I have a usb hub so no worries but it could be a factor for some.

Firmware Update Absolutely Needed!!!

Domokos V., Newegg
26 November 2008
  • Summary: You neeed firmware NE02. If you have NE01, go to the LG support website, download GSA-E50L_NE02(EW).zip and do the update. Be careful, if you make a mistake, you permanently damage your drive and LG Electonics doesn't accept responsability.
  • Pros: Estetically pleasing looks, good feature set and goood software bundle.
  • Cons: Does not recognize the disks that it burned itself. The disks are fine but GSA-E50L doesn't recognize them. In Windows Explorer they show up as blank disks with no free space. I wasted about a dozen of disks until I realized that the drive doesn't work correctly without the newest firmware update.

Sweet!

Kirsti T., Newegg
14 November 2008
  • Summary: At first I couldn't get my Tablet PC to recognize the device when it was plugged in and I was afraid I'd have to send it back. I did a little digging around online and ran across the suggestion to plug it in while the PC was off and then turn the PC on. Presto! It works!
  • Pros: small, lightweight, doesn't need a power outlet
  • Cons: not entirely plug-&-play, an optional case would be nice

Beautiful and works well

Anonymous, Newegg
6 November 2008
  • Summary: I have used this primarily (and heavily) for playing DVDs and audio CDs. I didn't wanna use slot loading drive of my MacBook too much for such heavy duty stuff - as they come with an expiration date.
  • Pros: Sleek and sturdy Looks stunning on desk with my laptop computer Doesn't make too much noise Doesn't require external power supply Put it on a USB hub with other devices like usb keyboard, external hard drive, etc.
  • Cons: None
