Summary: I thought it was my media (Taiyo Yuden CD's, Verbatim and TDK DVD's) until I realized it wouldn't even read media burned by the unit itself. I definitely got a bad one, and am not willing to try another of the same model or brand. Oh, and I gave it one egg because it's impossible to give 0 eggs.
Pros: USB bus powered; thin and lightweight; makes wonderful coasters, both DVD and CD
Summary: I use this with my eeePC 1000h, since it didn't have an optical drive built in.
Pros: Burner is as small as you could expect and fits well in a pouch in my laptop bag. Using USB for both data and power is a good solution when on the road, provided you have enough free USB ports. Burns as quickly as an internal burner on a minitower. Looks pretty sleek to boot.
Cons: Can get a little bit noisy when running at full speed, but seems to be a bit quieter than a lot of full size models that I've come across.
Summary: You neeed firmware NE02. If you have NE01, go to the LG support website, download GSA-E50L_NE02(EW).zip and do the update. Be careful, if you make a mistake, you permanently damage your drive and LG Electonics doesn't accept responsability.
Pros: Estetically pleasing looks, good feature set and goood software bundle.
Cons: Does not recognize the disks that it burned itself. The disks are fine but GSA-E50L doesn't recognize them. In Windows Explorer they show up as blank disks with no free space. I wasted about a dozen of disks until I realized that the drive doesn't work correctly without the newest firmware update.
Summary: At first I couldn't get my Tablet PC to recognize the device when it was plugged in and I was afraid I'd have to send it back. I did a little digging around online and ran across the suggestion to plug it in while the PC was off and then turn the PC on. Presto! It works!
Pros: small, lightweight, doesn't need a power outlet
Cons: not entirely plug-&-play, an optional case would be nice
Summary: I have used this primarily (and heavily) for playing DVDs and audio CDs. I didn't wanna use slot loading drive of my MacBook too much for such heavy duty stuff - as they come with an expiration date.
Pros: Sleek and sturdy Looks stunning on desk with my laptop computer Doesn't make too much noise Doesn't require external power supply Put it on a USB hub with other devices like usb keyboard, external hard drive, etc.
