Summary: The drive comes in handy on machines that don't have an optical drive and doesn't need a power supply which is convenient. It burns CD-R's without issues but almost never passes verification when burning a DVD. Ever.
Pros: I've had this drive for about 6 months and have used it well over 50 times ripping, burning and playing CD's/DVD's and have not once had a problem with it. I would recommend this to everyone, this seems to be a good quality drive.
Pros: Well there is not much to say, other than it worked and installed instantly under Windows 7 when I plugged it into the USB port. I did not need the extra power from another USB port, but some older laptops might. I purchased it for an Acer One Netbook, and it worked great.
Summary: I haven't tried LightScribe (and probably never will since the discs are so much more expensive). Drive works plug-and-play with Windows 7. I don't know what's on the accompanying CD (seems ironic that the stuff to make your optical drive work would be on a CD) but you don't seem to need it.
Pros: Much faster than I thought it would be at burning CDs and DVDs considering it is USB powered. Also, very cheap.
Cons: Occupies 2 USB ports (1 data + power and 1 power only)
Summary: Regarding lightscribe software, there might be something better out there, but I found one that got the job done for the moment.
Pros: Works just as expected in Mac OS. Tried burning audio CD from iTunes (on OS X 10.5 and 10.6). iTunes recognizes the drive perfectly. Worked on an old iBook G4. Lightscribe worked great. Excellent price.
Cons: Lightscribe sofware for OS X is a bit of an adventure. Try LaCie's version - its free.
Summary: just very annoyed at the product's inconsistency. how can it work flawlessly on one machine and render lightscribe useless on another? i'd give it 5/5 if other than the laptop issue.
Pros: everything works on my desktop (windows 7)
Cons: lightscribe does not work on my laptop (windows 7). this is very frustrating considering i have to burn labels from pictures from the laptop and not my desktop. i can't figure out why it won't read the lightscribe function at all from the laptop.
