So your DVD burner is getting a little long in the tooth and you’re ready for an upgrade, but you’re not all that keen on adopting next-gen tech. And who can blame you? Even the falling price of hardware doesn’t make up for the relatively slow burn times, costly media, and compatibility issues that plague Blu-ray burners (and the same would be true of HD DVD burners if you could even find them!). • Blu-ray and HD DVD disc reads, standard-DVD convenience.
    • Just slightly better than so-so DVD performance.

Let us summarize the most important positive and negative points below: The LG GGC-H20L’s ability to read High-Definition movies both in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats make this drive a must have for any desktop PC or Home Theater PC (HTPC). Writing of DVD-R and DVD+R media with the LG GGC-H20L at 16x with very good writing quality gives this unit the ability to be a single drive solution for Blu-ray and HD DVD playback as well as a CD and DVD burner. With their series of Super Multi Drives, LG has bridged the gap between Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD by giving users the ability to enjoy high-def movies in both formats. Unfortunately, the high price of these drives has put them out of reach for most consumers, especially those that are only looking to play movies. For these people, LG has introduced the GGC-H20L. Having a hybrid drive capable of reading both HD formats is a significant step towards greater adoption of Blu-ray and HD DVD-ROM. The other major factor is probably price. As we have seen in the US market, falling HDTV prices have led to a remarkable buying spree from consumers and we believe once these group of new users settle down with their purchases, the next inevitable step would be to sample the much touted HD versions of their favorite movies. I bought this drive for a HTPC. It works well and installed with no problems. On the down side, the activity light can be distracting. At least it's blue as it reminds me which drive is the blueray drive. ;-) It doesn't always read at 6x- sometimes it starts out at 3x and works it's way up. I dont know if this happens with other drives. Read more

The only way I am able to watch Blu-ray with these drives, is by placing a Blu-ray disc in it, and ripping it to the hard drive. Otherwise, the video keeps breaking up due to slow read. - DO NOT get the OEM version of this, or you won't even get the bad Power DVD 7 that comes with the retail version. You will eventually have to get Power DVD 9 Ultra. Read more

    • - Plays Blu-ray, I think.
    • - Slow read for Blu-ray, DVD, everything.

It's the perfect drive for watching any and all movies (DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray so you no longer have to put any thought into what format to buy) on your PC, which considering how Blu-ray profiles are going, seems to be the best solution. Software can be updated to support newer profiles. It's also extremely quiet even when running at full speed. Read more
