Summary: Bought for a slim SFF computer build with an ITX motherboard. It works great, reads and writes fast, and has a very short package which is what I needed. One star off because it makes a VERY weird loud noise when first starting up. I'm not sure if mine just has a poor actuating motor or something along those lines, but it sounds like the thing is going to jump into warp speed or come alive.
Summary: Most likely refurbished or at minimum very old corporate bulk sales drives, given the boxes they come in for shipment are 'HP logo brown box", again "Not new retail consumer boxes as most advertise". They are out of date drives from 2007 with out of date software. WINDOWS-"XP" or earlier, also they don't work within Windows7 Ultimate 64bit with any degree of stability!.
Summary: I installed this dvd burner into a brand-new custom-built machine. I went to burn a DVD, and it wouldn't recognize the disk. After trying several blank disks, I went to Microsoft's Fix-It site [...], and it reported that the drive was not capable of burning CDs. HP's web site does not even list the drive (it's actually a generic drive with their logo plate fixed to the front.) This is the second time I've had trouble with an HP DVD drive.
Summary: I purchased this HP-1270i in November 2011 from Amazon. I received it in only 2 days, very quick service. It performed flawlessly untill today after only 3 months it quit reading/writing. I burned approximately 300 DVD's. This was a heavy price for only 3 months service.
