Summary: This device will connect to Windows and will burn Verbatim 50G disc. However, so far, it will burn only 25 G worth of material onto a Verbatim 50G disc. I have contacted Brother and Verbatim. Verbatim asked for more info; Brother returned canned "we will be in touch" response. Update: I tried on my 2010 MacBook Pro. It burned 2 disks but failed to burn 2 more. Brother asked for more info, never followed up. I returned the unit. At minimum it is flakey.
Very nice, works great - software for Blu-ray playback and burning is usable
12 December 2014
Summary: This is a nice external drive. since most new laptops no longer include an internal drive, and many don't include a blu-ray drive, this is a really nice addition to most laptops. One of the biggest pluses is the included software which will let you play and burn Blu ray movies. many of the burners I looked at were either really expensive or didn't include the necessary software. This one does. I also like the indicator light on the burner.
Mixed results for data disks, and poor results playing Blu-Rays
23 October 2014
Summary: Preliminary results are mixed. I succeeded in creating two out of the first three data disks I recorded and then the rest all failed with unknown write errors (some large hex numbers) part way into the process. Was using Philips BD-RDL 50GB 6X Double Layer 10 Pack. I used the included Cyberlink software on Windows 7 to create the data disks.
Summary: Well i was looking for a burner for my laptop and after reading all the reviews i thought this one was the one for me....well lets just say this has not lived to its expectations...it has errored on about 90 percent of the blu rays discs ive tried to burn so now the blu rays are useless and on the few that have been sucessful it has taken well over 2 hrs to burn....
Recorder and Software are Good - Buffalo Customer Service is Slow to Non-existent
Book Lover, Amazon
6 August 2014
Summary: The recorder equipment from Buffalo and software from Cyberlink are functioning as advertised. Cyberlink, is very aggressive in its attempt to get one to purchase and updated version of their software. The functionality of the software and the price (it's bundled with the recorder), help one to ignore the appeals. Though Buffalo may have produced a good product, its customer service is below par.
Summary: I purchased this to use with a computer having OPENSUSE Linux, v13.1, not knowing whether it was supported. The Amazon tech support person could not find whether it was supported - it was not listed as one of the supported operating systems. Because I had checked prior to purchase, he told me that I could return it if it did not work. Otherwise, Amazon policy is not to accept returns on opened technology purchases.
Convenient way to play Blu-Ray movies -- but for a projector make sure your computer has HDMI

Summary: I got this device primarily to play Bly-Ray movies on my laptop, which it does quite well. Opinions vary regarding the built-in USB data and supplemental USB power cables. For me, on my laptop, connecting with one cable works fine and I like having the cable built into the drive so there is nothing I can lose (I've lost count of the cables and power adapters I've left in hotels!). Some technical notes: 1.
Summary: I bought this to play DVDs & BluRay discs on our drive-less new laptop. It seems to work pretty well. I have not attempted any of the other functions (burning discs, etc.) that the CyberLink software allows. The main reason I'm writing this review is to make sure folks know about the free update to the player software that comes with it. I put in a BluRay disc after installing the included software and it insisted that I UPDATE the software before it would play.
Summary: This works great. When I first bought it I was using a pc. It seemed a little slow and was loud while using. I have since switched to a Mac and the noise level has decreased. Don't know what that's all about. Also its a lot faster now too.
