works great

Gerald I., Newegg
2 April 2012
  • Summary: I have even used it as an external cd attached to a HP blade server using that special $65 cable that hp requires. Also for an older windows 2000 box.
  • Pros: works when I need it too no problems.
  • Cons: none

It was ok

Brandon T., Newegg
26 February 2012
  • Summary: I have an EEE PC and an Alienware M11X-R2. I have used this with both and i'd say it has a 90% success rate. If you can get it for cheap, then its not bad but if you can afford it, i'd look for something in the 40-50 dollar range. If not, it will do.
  • Pros: It runs off of 1 USB It works most of the time It was dirt cheap It uses a standard USB mini plug in case you lose the cable
  • Cons: I have run into a disc or 2 that won't work in it. I haven't really needed to burn discs with it but i would guess its just as spotty as reading. If it fails to read, sometimes unpluging it and pluging it in fixes it

Works okay / sometimes.

Mike H., Newegg
31 December 2011
  • Summary: Next time I'll spend more money and buy something more reliable.
  • Pros: It was cheap with the rebate. Light, portable, runs on USB.
  • Cons: After a few months, it's having trouble reading DVDs. I haven't tried CDs recently. In the middle of playing a DVD it will just stop, stall, or just spin and spin.

Worked as expected

Aaron G., Newegg
11 October 2011
  • Pros: I purchased this to help a friend re-install Windows XP on his netbook since it did not have a CD drive installed. It worked as intended with no isses, and nice when you need a quick plug and play DVD-Rom drive.
  • Cons: It seems a little slow for me, but I do not know, first USB DVD-Rom drive I have owned so I cannot confirm this is a slow drive.

Flimsy & Forget The Rebate

JOHN B., Newegg
27 August 2011
  • Summary: Guess it's unreasonable to expect a USB port to supply enough power to both burn and drive a CD/DVD unit. Try a burner with an external power supply.
  • Pros: Cheap if you get lucky enough to get the rebate. Powered entirely by a USB port would be nice if it worked.
  • Cons: Flimsy and the USB port is inadequate to power the drive. Check your USB's power output which do vary with computer brand and port chosen. As noted by others; Asus contracts with a rebate weasal which denies the email invoice which Newegg uses in place of an original product invoice sent w/ the p...

I think it will be good...

Chad O., Newegg
17 August 2011
  • Summary: I was a little hesitant to buy this after reading all the reviews. Stopped playing DVD format after a few days. Only plays CDs now. RMA done through ASUS Website. Maybe the second one will be better.
  • Pros: Small and quiet. Affordable

Great for light use

Richard M., Newegg
31 July 2011
  • Summary: About 6 months of periodic use and going strong.
  • Pros: Slim and inconspicuous. Powered by the USB cable, quick enough for installs on my device-less M11x. Solid enough feel, you physically pop the top up, which is a plus if something breaks it will be easy to get open.
  • Cons: Attracts dust and fingerprint grease like crazy.
