Asus BW-12D1S-U External Blu-ray Writer - Retail Pack
5 August 2014
Summary: Haven't used all the functions of this burner, but enjoy having it. I've burned some DVDs but not blu-ray discs yet. It writes and reads at very good speed... I was also impressed by performance.
Excerpt: Easy to setup hardware right-out-of-the-box. Easy to install included software for Windows 8. High quality but short length USB 3.0 cable. Tested burning CD-R immediately with no issues. Intended as blu-ray data disc backup for photos. Would recommend as solution for tablets or laptops with USB 3.0, but lacking a blu-ray player/burner.
Pros: Easy To Install, Easy To Use, Reliable Performance
Summary: Burn speed: My old computers have a USB 2.0 port so burn time was about 30 minutes. When using my new computer with a USB 3.0 port, the burn speed is about 10 minutes! I have burned through almost a hundred discs and all have turned out great! There are free burning/viewing software available and you will have to look for them if you do not have decent software like Nero and PowerDVD.
Summary: This burner has served me well. I really like it. It's a bit bulky (could be slimmer), but it works as designed. It's versitile enough to prop on its side using the stand or laying the burner flat. It's quite, too.
Summary: I have previously been using the Samsung SE-506BB 6x USB 2.0 External Slim BluRay Writer for many months now and it worked most of the time. Recently it has not been able to draw enough power to accurately read the blu-ray discs reliably. Discs I was having trouble reading, worked flawlessly on the ASUS drive. The USB 3.0 adds some necessary speed. The drive is big and bulky but sitting on my shelf it does not take up too much space.
Summary: This is a great external blu-ray player. It also works great with macs. All you have to do is plug it in and insert a disk. However, if you want to watch a blu-ray disc you will have to download a blu-ray player for your mac since there is not blu-ray player software that comes installed.
