Pros: Great operating system, I have had no conflicts/driver issues like a lot of people complain about on any of my 4 computers that use it. Not a bad price on this version if you do not want all of the bells and whistles of the more expensive versions.
Cons: It took me 10 minutes to open the case that these come in, very strange case if you have never seen one before. You have to flip the middle of the case to the side, not open it like a book!
Summary: Bought this because I needed an OS for a new entry level PC and had a qualifying copy of W2k. On sale it was about 2/3rds retail, so it was dirt cheap. As far as upgrading from xp home, I guess it depends on what you pay, play and install it on.
Pros: It installed with working drivers for everything (video, sound, network). I ended up putting it on a MSI PM8M3, p4-3ghz, 1gig mem and a nvdida fx5500). I did upgrade the video and sound drivers as the supplied ones were kind of lame. This is a nice improvement over xp home for general purpose use...
Cons: Microsoft makes you jump thru hoops to do a clean install (I.E. empty hard drive). I tested this upgrade on 3 PC's (I'm retired) and it degraded performance about 10% over XP (all PC's had 1 to 2 gigs memory). For gaming my better PC on a doom3 timedemo at high (1280x1024) went from 90 to 80 fram...
Summary: I seem to be opposite of most people having constant problems with xp where they do not. I put this on my gaming machine, dv8000 and d600 laptops and couldnt be happier. Conflicts have gone away as drivers have been released. Only one crash to date, put in install disc and its fixed.
Pros: Shallow learning curve. Easy installation with single disc. No more blue screens.
Cons: Driver hunting. One kit was 5 discs and had install issues.
Summary: I can don't give a @#$@ about what Home Premium has. I don't have not need for a media center, I can care less about the aero interface. All I want is a operating system with DIRECTX 10.
Pros: Installed right out of the box. Plays directx 10 games. There is a tweak to enable aero glass. I have had no troubles, all because I was smart and backed up all my files to a seperate my hardrive and was willing to clean install. My expirence rating was 5.4
Cons: It cant upgrade from windowsMDE, so I did a clean install and backup all my files to a spare hardrive.
Summary: YOU CAN TURN OFF THE PART WHERE IT ASKS IF YOU WANT TO PROCEED! The part where it asks you if you want to proceed with this action. I'm thinking about putting it on my Crosshair so I can play X10 games.
Pros: Vista installs easy and finds its own drivers. I installed this on a New Gigabite board with two gigs of DDR2 800 speed and it loads so fast the line only goes across the screen three times before vista comes on. It works perfectly on everything and surfs fast too. I think it looks pretty nice. I...
Summary: For the right kind of user, Vista Basic is an ideal choice. Gamers should stay where they are until after SP1 is released and then take a second look.
Pros: No gamer should consider using this operating system at this time. XP is a mature platform and a much better choice for gaming at this time. However, for users who have other purposes in mind (digital darkroom in my case), Vista Basic is without question the best Microsoft operating system so far...
Cons: Some if Vista's security systems are more annoying then they are useful. Check tweaking sites to see how to roll these back safely.
Summary: great product for anyone who is willing to spend the dough and build a new computer to go with the software. if you have and old pc that was state of the art when xp sp2 came out, chances are it probably won't run this without a lot of problems.
Pros: works great, somehow with a x2 4000 and 2 gig, it runs faster than my pc with and x2 6000 and 4 gig of ram. very few compatiblit issues (see cons). also, i am obsessed with the sidebar gadgets. i've downloaded over 30 so far. they are awesome.
Cons: ane compatiblity issue with a 4 year old isp disk. it was time to upgrade anyway. also it took me about 10 minutes of fighting with the case before i figured out how to open it. for anyone else geting this product and wants to save yourself the embarrasment, it flips open like a pocket knife.
