Aggressively innovative Windows 8 forces a steep learning curve

CNET
17 May 2013
  • Summary: Microsoft makes an aggressive, forward-thinking, and bold statement for the future of PCs with Windows 8, and vast security and speed improvements more than justify the $40 upgrade price.
  • Pros: Windows 8 embraces the future wholeheartedly. Log-in and boot times are fast, the apps look gorgeous, and the Sync feature brings seamless transition between devices.
  • Cons: The learning curve is steep and in-app navigation isn't obvious. There are just too many known unknowns here.

Improved Windows still torn between tablet future and PC past

CNET
8 May 2013
  • Summary: If you're a dedicated Windows 8 hater, the update to Windows 8.1 isn't going to change your mind. For everyone else, this collection of tweaks, fixes, and new features is useful, but everything here should have shipped in the original version last year.
  • Pros: Windows 8.1 adds many useful tweaks and fixes, including a new version of the missing Start button, better searching, the ability to boot directly to the desktop, and a much-improved app store. Plus, it's free for current Windows 8 users.
  • Cons: The split between the touch-friendly tiles and throwback desktop mode is still awkward, and the OS is hard to use without a touch screen. While welcome, the new Start button doesn't behave like the classic version, and the Windows app store still lacks serious software, especially for gamers.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 review

v3.co.uk
12 May 2013
  • Summary: Windows 8.1 brings welcome user interface tweaks to Microsoft's touch-centric platform, plus a heap of innovative new features and capabilities. However, we fear that the Metro-style user interface will still be the stumbling block for many users, especially those using existing Windows applications.
  • Pros: More customisable user interface, new wireless support, better mobility and BYOD features for business
  • Cons: Metro-style user interface still jars, little reason to upgrade for Windows 7 users

Windows 8

Pocket Lint
29 August 2012
  • Conclusion: Using Windows 8 for a while has had an interesting effect on us. We started off finding it confusing, and for the most part there are still things in here that baffle us. We have, however, learnt how to use the OS now. It's rare we can't get it to do what we want, and while there are still some huge frustrations, it's not perhaps as bad as we had feared. We still want to be able to use a Start menu instead of the Start screen.
  • Pros: Windows is still a great OS, decent upgrade price, amazing start-up and shut-down speeds, enough new features to justify asking price, restore/refresh is a brilliant and well-executed idea, handwriting recognition is amazing
  • Cons: Metro/Modern is confusing and will require people to re-learn Windows, Supplied modern apps are mostly rubbish, the UI can be very inconsistent
