Summary: Parents need to know that The Wonderful 101 is a frenetic action game with moderate cartoon violence. Players combine a large group of heroes into various weapons -- swords, whips, guns -- to fight an army of mostly robotic aliens that explode when defeated. That said, some are living beings and at least one of them gets chopped in half.
Excerpt: With its brazen palette of vibrant colours, a hokey storyline and energetic cast of superheroes clad in ridiculous outfits, The Wonderful 101 ’s inspirations are fairly obvious. From Voltron to Kamen Rider , Ultraman and of course, the Power Rangers , Platinum Games’ latest feeds off of the Saturday morning TV show with loving panache. Don’t be fooled by its whimsical surface, however. This is still a game born from the sprightly mind of Hideki Kamiya and his team.
Excerpt: The latest title from Platinum Games is a crazy mash-up of super-hero tropes and Japanese action button mashers. Published by Nintendo and developed for the Wii U, The Wonderful 101 helps fill the console’s line-up with something new and interesting.
Conclusion: "Mission mode gives you a permanently full Unite bar, and the combat is much more engaging as a result" "It’s the clumsy, ham-fisted delivery of some sections that grates the most" "Those who do persevere with the game and plumb its depths will find plenty of content to master"
Pros: Viewtiful Joe-esque characters and style, Spectacular boss battles, Loads of depth and secrets
Cons: Stop-start gameplay is hard to enjoy, Some near-unplayable sections, Just not as fun as it should be
The Wonderful 101 (Wii U) Review – This is Anything but “Wonderful”
4 October 2013
Excerpt: Right off the bat, it is evident The Wonderful 101 is a game that doesn’t overlook a chance to poke fun at itself. Attempts at self-deprecating humor (and general cheesiness at times) may indicate otherwise but at its core, its actually a pretty dedicated action game. It just turned out to be one that really never resonated with. The premise of The Wonderful 101 is pretty typical save-the-earth-from-an-attacking-alien-race fare.
