LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Wii U) Review
18 June 2013
Excerpt: The whole third party situation with the Wii U is potentially one of weirdest we’ve seen in the industry yet. Developers aren’t really putting out any original content for the console, and besides a few choice titles coming towards the end of the year, it seems the Wii U is only getting ports.
Excerpt: What happens when the greatest detective meets the DC Universe ? The answer is LEGO Batman 2 DC Super Heroes that stars Batman and a plethora of awesome DC Comics characters (over 70 to be precise) such as Superman, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman in this open world LEGO game plus dastardly villains such as Gorilla Grodd and even General Zod!
Pros: Danny Elfman score! John Williams' Superman theme!, Entertaining cutscenes with well-written dialog, Gotham City is darkly beautiful and fun to explore, Two players are free to explore the large open city independently
Cons: Framerate noticeably halved during co-op play, Many actions and animations reprised from other LEGO games, Missed opportunity to make a Bat Shark Repellent Spray reference, No entertaining dialog during humdrum missions
Excerpt: LEGO Batman 2 DC Super Heroes has made it to the Wii U, which is great for Wii U owners. Especially if they have not previously played LEGO Batman 2 DC Super Heroes. I had played some of it before so it was a trip down memory lane. A recent trip down memory lane, but a pleasant one.
Conclusion: LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is pretty solid on the Wii U. While there is some control issues that create frustration when the Wii remote jumps into the mix, the game still defines what a LEGO game should look and play like.
Conclusion: I would pickup LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes if you haven’t played the original on other consoles. The game is a bunch of fun to play with someone else. If you’ve played the original then i’d only recommend to pick this up if you really love playing games using Off TV play.
Summary: If it wasn’t for LEGO City Undercover, LEGO Batman 2 would easily be the pinnacle of the LEGO games series. It’s a hugely ambitious title that, while sticking to the principles of the series, takes chances in its design to make it feel fresh. But it is a game that is now a year old with only a handful of meaningful improvements, and a bespoke Wii U LEGO title that improves upon almost everything is now available; as a result it's hard to wholeheartedly recommend it.
