Nothing too special

  • Excerpt: Ridge Racer 64 is the N64 version of the popular racing game that is on many a console and arcade game with the usual blasting techno. The game is fast and fun, simple racing without any shortcuts or other targets to reach or things to collect. Automatic Transmission is a great way to start off and like the majority of titles, once you've mastered that you can make the game harder for yourself by trying it on Manual Transmission.

A Gem of a racing game!

  • Excerpt: As one may know, if you're in search for the ultimate realistic racer then you have chosen the wrong game. Ridge racer is all about arcade racing at break neck speeds, not to mention the classic drifting around bends... nostalgia, all to the tune of smashing techno music. Ridge Racer 64 (RR64) is no different, other than it distills what racing is all about. Cut out flashy intro's and get straight to the chase.

  • Excerpt: Ridge Racer 64 is a superb racing game, probably the Nintendo64's best racing game. The graphics are excellent, if a little undetailed when compared to the PlayStation efforts. However, frame rate is amazingly high, and the game is very, VERY fast. The music is a bit poor, the usual Ridge Racer Japanese techno, but it does suit the natuyre of the game. Engine sounds are fairly good, although for some reason they are mssing in the multiplayer mode.

  • Excerpt: I have quite a few racing games in my collection and Ridge Racer is certainly one of the best. The smooth graphics and feeling of big time speed set this game apart from alot of racers. The variety of cars isn't bad but they don't look much different from one another and the ability to mix colors is an interesting one. In some ways I found the difference in engines a little confusing. I literally couldn't keep my car on the road using the Ultra Z model.

  • Excerpt: One of the things that made the original Ridge Racer so appealing, was the 'techno' style soundtrack. Whilst not to everyone's taste, the up tempo nature of the tunes were perfectly suited to the fast paced gameplay. Despite not having the advantage of a CD-ROM drive, the N64 renditions of the in-game tunes are surprisingly authentic. Overall, Ridge Racer 64 is a title that will appeal to pretty much anyone who owns a Nintendo 64.

  • Excerpt: This game actually had me quite excited, it had good graphics, fast gameplay and cool cars. Or so said some of the reviews I was stupid enough to read. Firstly, the graphics are nowhere near what I wouldclassify as "good". They aren't much better than Cruis'n USA and that is without doubt the crappiest racing game I have ever had the misfortune to play.

  • Excerpt: I am sure that you are all aware of the Ridge Racer series which has been doing the rounds on the PlayStation for a few years, the latest being Ridge Racer 4. Instead of a simple port of the latest incarnation, NST (Nintendo Software Technology) have gone back to the roots of the series and built upwards from there.

  • Excerpt: Why does everyone think Ridge Racer is the most perfect racing game on the N64? What is it that makes this ageing racer score so highly? When you compare it to the other N64 racers, it is true that it's not the worst. If you're looking to buy a driving game for your N64...BE CAREFUL. There are some real horrors out there, and they are usually the ones in the bargain bins.
