Paper Mario

Thunderbolt Games
17 July 2007
  • Excerpt: In a time where many role-playing games employ the conventional menu-driven battle system, you can always trust Mario to bring something new to the table. After numerous wacky sports and party titles, he livens up yet another derivative genre. Paper Mario starts off predictably enough with Peach choosing a particularly sunny day in which to throw a swank party. Not on her invite list is her repeatedly would-be kidnapper, Bowser.

Paper Mario

RPG LAND
28 March 2006
  • Excerpt: Back in the days of the N64, people were calling for new RPGs for the system, since Square had jumped ship to develop for Sony’s PlayStation. Their cries were largely unheard, because the few RPGs that the console got were rather dull and easily forgotten.

Paper Mario – Review

GameCritics.com

  • Excerpt: Nintendo hasn't been very kind to certain portions of its fan base during the lifetime of the Nintendo 64. Anyone who's spent any time with the machine over the last few years will certainly have noticed the absence of entire genres in their software lineup. There isn't a single decent fighting game to be had on the system, and RPGs have received the same cold shoulder as well.

Paper Mario

GYEAH.COM
21 March 2004
  • Excerpt: Mario makes his triumphent return to the world of Rpgs, but this time with a new developer. When it comes to making rpgs Square soft is king. Unfortunately this time around Mario had to settle for Intelligent Systems, but this is not a bad thing. Intelligent Systems did a damn good job of creating what will be the last Mario title on N64. They came up with a very innovative way of presenting the standard Mario story line that we are all familiar with.
  • Pros: Innovative gameplay and graphics., Dozens of recogonizable characters sure to take you back to your NES and SNES days., Easy to pick up, even if you aren't used to RPGs., It's MARIO!
  • Cons: Pixelated graphics at times., Relatively easy to beat, can be completed in several days.

  • Excerpt: Leave it to gaming god Shigeru Miyamoto, then, to try his hand at this "RPG" thing. When the collaboration on the original Mario RPG took place, Miyamoto-san decided to take a step back, leaving the project in the reliable hands of the house that Final Fantasy built.

  • Excerpt: Paper Mario is a game that thrives on pure fun and succeeds. It is very distantly related to the SNES game Mario RPG, but only a few aspects will let you know this. One is the action commands, which are button combinations you must perform while in battle to do more damage or defend yourself. The other aspect is being able to dodge the random enemy encounters. To fight, you simply hit enemies on the field map or avoid them altogether.

  • Excerpt: Only the 967th game to feature Nintendo's trademarked fathead carpenter turned plumber, Paper Mario takes every last ounce of horsepower the N64 game console could possible hope to muster and then throws it out the window, saddle and all.
