Summary: It ran well for almost a year and would probably run fine for a lot longer, I just got tired of the noise so I built a much quieter fileserver that works sooooo much better.
Pros: It is very compact and will fit anywhere. There is a pretty good user community out there willing to help with problems you might have. The iTunes server is nice.
Cons: This thing is LOUD. If you are anything like me and can't stand the sound of high pitched fans then this is not the NAS for you. Yes there are folks out there who have modded the fan to make the box a little more quiet, but these mods never look very appealing. Also if you are buying this to stor...
Excerpt: If you are looking for a quality NAS, the N2100 from Thecus is worth your consideration. It can act as a music and photo sharing hub and even an FTP server, among others. Though, the best part might be it’s price.
Pros: Price, NAS box that offers RAID 0, 1, JBOD, Quality made product, Supports hard drives up to 500GB, Dual gigabit NICs, Simple software, Ease of use
Cons: Manual could be a bit more in-depth, No eSATA (see the Thecus N2050 DAS)
Summary: I've had my N2100P since 07/2006. I switched from a dedicated file server to save money, electricity, heat, space, etc. I regret that now. The speed issue is VERY painful as Windows inventories files on-the-go. The speed issue didn't improve with firmware updates either. In fact, it got worse.
Pros: +Easy to configure +Accessible by IP, so no client software +Small footprint +iTunes server capable +Quick copy from external USB hard drive
Cons: -Painfully SLOW access to large directories -Runs hot because it uses too small of a fan and has NO air intakes -No rubber feet on the bottom or side, so it's loud unless you put something underneath it
Summary: This product was not ready for prime time, and I would love my money back.
Pros: Easy to use. Setup a breeze
Cons: 1. Device runs to hot and will burn itself out - Support said take the lid off the unit. 2. Security is worthless - A friend with only a little knowledge handed me my root password in under two minutes - I e-mailed support about how my friend did this and no response. 3. Support not responsive
Summary: Tech support is just as bad as prevoiusly reported. Irresponsive. Wish I could return this piece of garbage.
Pros: Easy to use. Setup a breeze.
Cons: Overheats, drive dead in 4 months. The fan's too weak to sustain 2 disks, making this unit useless for RAID. Worst of all, when 1 disk died, it doesn't report disk failure until I manually look in the system!!
Summary: Put a raid card in a spare PC and you will get much better results.
Pros: Lots of good features.
Cons: My unit failed after the firmware update(which thecus reccomends). According to their troubleshooting guide, I have a bad motherboard, even though the unit worked long enough to get the new firmware loaded. I followed their procedures exactly. Their support is less than helpful, and they will not...
Summary: The basic unit works reasonably well. But due to the poor quality of the documentation, and extremely BAD CUSTOMER SUPPORT, this is definitely not recommended for ANYBODY.
Pros: Speedy, performs RAID builds quickly, comes with gigabit ethernet support, Windows file sharing works well.
Cons: Interface quirky - relies on IE, case cheap plasticy, kind of loud fan in an office room, ACL's have some problems being set up, FTP to it works but FTP from it doesn't!!, doesn't say you can't route from other subnet if you use LAN port 2, limited support of hard disks, and ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE C...
Summary: I bought this mostly to serve media to my modified x-box... it does that 100% perfectly. Also used as general storage and for backups. I have never used the iTunes or picture servers. I looked around to try and find a stronger fan but didn't see any powerful 40x10 fans anywhere.
Pros: Very easy to setup and configure. No drivers needed, it is an actual SMB networked drive unlike cheap NASs. Very stable; it has been up for months without a single problem. Fan is not too loud. Web interface is good, provides a lot of information. Can add IDE drive(s) in an external enclosure to ...
Cons: My only problem with it is the poor ventilation... the drive runs warmer than I would like (around 40 C according to the web interface.. not horrible). I would be very cautious about putting two drives in here though. It has a small 40mm fan that just can't exaust the air fast enough. The air inl...
Summary: The unit sets up quickly, and the installation of drives is easy. Be careful to buy compatible SATA drives - these are not clearly identified in the documentation, which also lacks in other areas in terms of helping you get the thing running right on your network.
Pros: Overall Good Value, Handy web management interface, RAID 0 or RAID 1, SATA interface, Gigabit Ethernet
Cons: Plastic Case Seems Cheap, For another hundred I could have bought a PC, Documentation is lacking detail, Certain SATA drives apparently incompatible
Pros: Excellent NAS. Take me no time to setup and use. I've upgraded to the latest firmware and keep contacting their technican, who told me new firmware is coming out soon which will support PRINT SERVER and bit torrent (BT). So glad to know the money I spend on N2100S, the value keeps growing with ne...
Cons: The price has dropped since I purchased....but I guess can't complain too much on this as IT products' price always drop.
