Greg King, Techgage

  • Conclusion: The testing procedure here at Techgage for networked hardware is pretty simple and straight forward. Starting with Sandra, we run the network bandwidth benchmark built into the popular suite of tests.

Worse support ever/Lack of backup

David S., Newegg
5 October 2007
  • Summary: I previously put a review on here saying how great it was, now I wish I had waited.
  • Pros: Most things work as described
  • Cons: I have not been able to trust this device since having a problem about a month into using it. Tech support sometimes takes more then 24 hours to respond. Sent them the device once and didnt hear anything about it for about two weeks or so. Finally sent them an email saying I desperatly wanted it ...

  • Pros: Quiet, single SATA drive operation NAS.
  • Cons: Not quite as fast as my 5-disk Thecus N5200 was when I had just 1 drive in it.

Ok But

Ronald S., Newegg
30 June 2007
  • Summary: would have kept it if it hasd an inactivity timer that shuts it down after inactivity (cause it gets hot)
  • Pros: Has an ESata port
  • Cons: Didn't shut down as the D-Link DNBS-323 does after no activity and gets kinda hot. I'll stick with D-Link DNS-323 came from NewEgg of course.

Great Product no one Knows About

Anonymous, Newegg
14 June 2007
  • Summary: I paired this product with a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB drive. It works perfectly. Installation was a snap and setup and operation is relatively easy. I bought this for two reasons: I needed another external hard drive and I wanted a better way to stream video, pictures, and music to my PS3.
  • Pros: Works great as a Network Storage Device and media Server. Streams compatable media to the PS3. Tons of options! And it gives me access to my files without leaving my power hungry PC on all the time.
  • Cons: Doesn't support .mp4's. Doesn't have any sort of transcoding software. Packaged manual is garbage, BUT, the included disc has a in-depth manual in .pdf format.

Thecus N1200

James K., Newegg
23 May 2007
  • Summary: Product runs great. Took many hours for Thecus Setup Wizard to recognize the drive. Reason: Setup Wizard requires the "Server" service to run properly. Recieved no errors...however application log reported error with server service. After running sfc /scannow with SP2 CD in computer..
  • Pros: Very versatile. Great price
  • Cons: Thecus Setup Wizard (explained in "other thoughts")

Great single drive solution

Eric C., Newegg
17 May 2007
  • Summary: Love it!
  • Pros: Faster than average NAS. Easy to set up, except for a little issue with my HD having a jumper limiting it to sata 1.5. But after removing it, it was a breeze. Using it as music storage, for use with my Roku Soundbridge. Works fine with both itunes server AND mediabolic. I also intend to set up FT...
  • Cons: Would love for it to be a 2 drive unit (but i guess that would be a different product)

Great little NAS box

Wolfgang T., Newegg
16 May 2007
  • Summary: Transfering a 6MB file between my work (T1) and home (DSL 200Kb/3Mb) took about 1.5min Up & 2.5min Down. The N1200 accepted my AirLink101 Wireless Super G USB dongle and I could set it up though I haven't tried any actual wireless talking/xfering yet.
  • Pros: Setup Wizard makes it easy to setup the unit. Fast xfer - at least a lot faster than other NAS enclosures I've tried. It also accepted my el cheapo AirLink USB wireless dongle. -- The unit seems to be selling well. Get one now before it's out of stock again.
  • Cons: After I finished configuring the unit, I turned it off to move to its final working space. Turned it back on and it got stuck at initializing LAN (LED kept flashing). Setup Wizard stopped detecting the unit. Took out the SATA 3.0Gb hard drive and it initialized ok. I requested Newegg to send me a...

Good Versatile Storage Solution

David S., Newegg
15 May 2007
  • Summary: Great device. Like for any device that stores information on a network, if you make the device available over the internet, just be aware of security issues and what you store on it.
  • Pros: This is a very versatile storage device. It has more features in it then what I have seen of others. More features then what I will be using. But that only gives me the opportunity to grow into it, instead of out of it. It was easy to set up and start using. I am using it for storing music and fo...
  • Cons: You need a Mac or Windows to get the device up and running.
