Media Storage & Playback Experience

Richard H., Newegg
16 February 2010
  • Summary: Works great as a low wattage, always on, NAS storage unit with Raid 5 capability that in addition to having its own internal GUI and output can alternatively interface through an Ethernet connection with a PS3 or Blu-ray player in combination with Windows 7 network media capability.
  • Pros: Well build and reliable unit. Easy to operate. Automatically establishes media storage folders during setup. Both Component & HDMI outputs are impressive.
  • Cons: Compatible with Windows 7 through a browser interface but supplied software must be installed and initially set up with Windows XP or other older operating system. GUI slows down when handling large files (8MB photos & 500MB videos) that are produced with today's high end DSLR cameras.

If you are thinking of getting this to serve media

Nick T., Newegg
9 October 2009
  • Summary: This is excellent for the primary purpose, as a NAS. Running several months with no problems. I just house my media on the NAS and drive it all (playback wise for movies/video) through a PS3 -- the interface is much better.
  • Pros: 2 gig interfaces, usb, esata. Runs linux with a very basic but able GUI interface. Has HDMI but the menu system and remote isn't going to impress your friends.
  • Cons: The selling point of this nas is the meida connected directly to your TV, but the menus and system looks extremely dated an uncomfortable.

So so NAS/Media combination

RoB, Amazon
31 May 2009
  • Summary: Initial unit from Amazon turned out to be faulty but replaced unit worked straight out of the box. Thumbs up to Amazon for an excellent returns policy. I have an existing N2100 from Thecus which has been rock solid for around 3 years and the reason I stuck with Thecus when upgrading.
