Summary: This box is working great for our needs and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
Pros: iSCSI works great with vSphere 4.1 Easy to use web interface. Several optional add-on apps for functionality. I like that they're not just all automatically installed like bloatware.
Cons: Installation didn't go so well. I popped in all my 4 TB drives and went through the install. It choked and told me to open up port 23 (telnet) on my router and call support. I didn't like that option, so I google'd it. It turns out, you should do the initial install with one hard drive in the sys...
Summary: We bought this rackstation to replace the main mail/file server in our company. It functions as a mail server for all 50 of our users, and also as a RAID file server for our jobs. The GUI is simple and easy to understand.
Summary: We were looking for a RAID setup that would allow the primary drive and three backups and that would allow hot swapping of a failed drive with auto rebuild of the data on the new drive, like we had on our old Snap Servers. Unfortunately that RAID setup would not work with this unit.
Summary: Just plug in the drives, install the recommended software on any machine on the network, and setup this device as you wish. Very simple and straightforward. I've only had it working for 1 month so we'll see how well it lasts over time. No news would be the best news.
Summary: buying another to use exclusively for VMWare data recovery shares.
Pros: unboxed and added four 4-tb hd's configured in a RAID 5. connected both LAN's in 802.3ad to a Netgear switch. Configured for iSCSI and connected to a VMWare Esxi5 host. Works perfect. Sold. Redundant LANs, power supplies and HD's. Very nice.
Cons: Installing Synology DSM is a little weird. You will need to find the correct model number on the CD. Not entirely user friendly. You need to update the DSM immediately from the Synology website.
