Summary: Initial Review: 7/29/2014 I received this unit yesterday and was excited to get it started and have everything work. It flashes blue non-stop and doesn't do anything else. I searched online and it looks like a complete motherboard failure? Or it may be related to a faulty production flash issue. I am returning the unit to Amazon for a replacement, and I will update my review upon getting the new one.
Summary: I've moved on from my HP MediaSmart server that's been on its last legs for the last year or so. Iwas quite used to the MediaSmart server setup and interface, so i was a little worried about the Synology device. However, after a month or so of using the DS414j, I'm realizing what a great product this is. It does everything it advertises.
Summary: This is my third Synology purchase in the past 9 months. The first was a DS412+ as general purpose NAS and iSCSI storage in a small office. I was so pleased with it that I bought a DS213j for a home NAS and for iSCSI for my home VMware lab. After the DS414j was announced, I gave the DS213j to a family member and upgraded to the DS414j.
Summary: My old 2-bay NAS was running out of space and I wanted a 4-drive one anyway. Didn't realize how fast this puppy is! Also, you might need a caddy for your drives but no tools are required and it mounts the drives that much more secure into it. This is an expensive NAS but well worth the money.
Excerpt: My wife is a professional photographer and I'm in IT. I have about 4TB of movies, music, applications, etc., on a Windows 8.1 desktop, and she has 1.5TB of RAW & edited photos on an iMac. It's connected to a Netgear WNDR4500 wireless router/with 4-1GB ports. We both have Solid State HD's for our OS, but our data is on standard spindle drives. We are both averaging 75/mbps on saving large files in multiple directories.
Summary: Received quickly and had it up and running within only several minutes of having it out of the box. Installed two drives and installation was very quick and tool-less. The hardest part of getting started was trying to use the box's web interface to examine the hard drive configuration. Funny, once I figured out how to access the settings, I found that the NAS had set everything up exactly how I had wanted it anyway.
Summary: This is my first nas, and it has been awesome. I went from Windows server 2012 Essentials to this Synology and it's been a smooth transition so far. I did want to have a server running all the time, so I did my research and I found that Synology is an awesome nas brand and boy was I right. It's smaller than I thought it would be from the pictures, so it doesn't take up much space.
Summary: The unit was easy to set up and has worked flawlessly so far (one month plus). The only reason I have not given it 5 stars is I have not used a lot of the built in and add-on (software) features yet (of which there are a lot), so cannot give it a top recommendation. I just got an email notice of a software update for my version of the software and the previous version, so support also seems to be good.
