Summary: Bought this on sale for 350$ - 392$ w/ tax. Very good value for the money. Besides expanding enormously your storage, the Synology DSM is top notch, which is what makes Synology NAS'es worth it. Prolly if you just want a local storage array, there could be cheaper alternatives. The 413j is perfectly suited for home use (1-3 users). The CPU is plenty and same with RAM. Regarding my cons, as I mentioned the UPS implementation is dumb.
Pros: Backs up your data, Hybrid RAID or standard RAID for redundancy, Quite easy to setup, Synology DSM
Cons: Quite dumb implementation when on UPS, Ethernet port makes cable very wobbly
Summary: I gave this unit 4 stars because of the price and the print server doesn't work as well as it should. Even though its price is competitive with other brands it is still a little too expensive for the consumer market. It is hard to justify a box with no disks that costs nearly $400 when you can get a 2TB USB drive for around a hundred bucks. The reason I bought this was that I had all my collected videos, software backups, etc. on a 2TB drive I'd added to my computer.
[UPDATE: replacement works great!] Won't turn on. Endemic problem with power supply units for Synology products?

Summary: Update: Jan 19 2013 I decided to return the DiskStation to Amazon and their excellent replacement service had a new one out to me in a week (probably would have got one sooner but they were out of stock). The new DiskStation worked perfectly and I can now agree with all the positive things people said about these devices. I am currently setting up my home router to forward the necessary ports so I can make the most out of it.
Summary: This is my third Synology "home class device -e or j". It meets my requirements, but it's a bit sluggish on the interface, performs strong from a file delivery perspective (streaming video). I'm fine with the unit for the next 3 to 5 years, but I suspect I would have been happier with the 412 or 412+. FYI, still running my 407e that I bought in 2006 for all my backups without issue.
Summary: First off this is a nice little box, seems fast and reliable, but I do not consider it a good solution for a home infrastructure server (eg AD, Email, Web Servers), their offering is not yet mature (although it is probably where the market is going). I particularly love the little Android apps you can download, I can basically control this completely from my phone, and in no way do I consider it a poor purchase, but it tries to be all things to all men and falls a little...
Summary: I was going to put this in my house, but unfortunately the internet connection at home is rubbish (in the sticks) so I decided to install it at work where we have a 100mb leased line, however although it only took 20 minutes to set it up, it isn't really simple. I am a technical manager in my work and so I am used to finding out how new pieces of equipment work, but this DS413J doesn't really follow any of the normal PC/Mac conventions, that's because it runs Linux - an...
Summary: Only had this product a few weeks, but my initial thoughts about this device is that it is great. Unfortunately although it says that it is compatible with my broadband router I cannot get this portion to work. I also had some issues connecting it to the media player, but this was a permissions issues and not a product issue. I think the application packages are great and the few I have played around with work really well.
