ffitz2, Amazon

  • Summary: I have installed several Synology DiskStations NAS devices now. My clients needs include file sharing on LAN workgroups and iSCSI targets for servers. I have implemented 2, 4, 5, and 8 drive models with WD Red and Seagate NAS hard disks.

User Review

  • Pros: Easy to setup. Installing the hard drives was simple and direct. Took a few seconds to set up the raid, 3 TBytes of Raid 1. Tons of apps on the website
  • Cons: Still setting this up and I can only comment on lack of understanding on my part for now.

Great hardware - limiting software features

Mark G., Newegg
  • Summary: The non-profit office will eventually use several of the DS214 feature to "serve media file" such as audio and video files. While the versioning backups required using the 2nd slot right-away, it is possible to migrate two hard drives from a DS214 into a 4-bay DS box in the future.
  • Pros: The DS214 has a very easy setup, a rich set of features, and works right out of the box. I created a shared folder that syncs with my wife's My Documents folder (and all sub-folders) so that she has a backup copy of all of her documents, spreadsheets and other files. For my PC, I created a shared...
  • Cons: I've used the DS214 for my home and for a non-profit office. In the case of my home, the software that came with the DS214 did not support creating full, incremental, backups of my home PCs--I had to buy Paragon Backup and Recovery 15 Home software to take a complete block-level backup of my PC. ...

It just works

Jeffrey F., Newegg

  • Summary: People griping about the speed.......... If you wanted fiber channel speed, you should've bought a better device.
  • Pros: I paired this with two 2TB WD Black disks after my PC-based NAS went down. After getting all of the data onto it I was able to easily put the second disk in to get redundancy. The read/write speeds listed are accurate and while not phenomenal, it's still more than adequate for most. It's dead sil...
  • Cons: Setup takes a bit long with the initialization. I'm not thrilled with the entire cloud (someone else's computer) integration so I declined joining all of that rubbish. If I need remote access, I'll just VPN into my SonicWALL. The DS File app for iOS is bloated and takes up a ton of space but that...

Great NAS with excellent mobile apps (works with OneDrive)

kstali, Amazon
  • Summary: This is a great solution for a home NAS. I wanted it so I could sync from OneDrive to the NAS automatically. So far the results have been great and it was fairly easy to setup. The nice thing is that I can store all my music on here and use their music apps (iOS, Android, Windows) to play the music...

  • Excerpt: I am a professional from IT area and very familiar with professional grade NAS (like EMC's). However this is my first NAS at home and so far I am liking it. First, the hardware installation is pretty easy, no tools needed.
  • Pros: Compact, Lots Of Apps, Quiet, Reliable, Somehow Fast, Some How Fast
  • Cons: Not That Easy To Setup

Did my research this time and glad that I did

A. Theis, Amazon
3 July 2015
  • Summary: Did my research this time and glad that I did. I had been buying cheap NAS drives for backup. You pay more for Synology but you're buying into an eco-system that gets updated all the time and has an excellent interface. I recommend these to all my clients and friends.

Never will give that drive away

Hans-edmund Glomme, Amazon
3 July 2015
  • Summary: I bought that NAS as a replacement for my D-LINK NAS drive what has to come into the years and also was very loud. PROS: - The Sinology web-browser based admin panel (DMS) is very user friendly and MUCH better than that from my old NAS. - It's more than fast enough for our home use.

When it works its great, but is rarely works

Joseph Millard, Amazon
30 June 2015
  • Summary: So much promise in this device. WHEN IT WORKS, the media share is top notch, the server is reliable, and the use is easy. BUT, it rarely stays online for more than a few hours, and then you cannot connect to the device remotely for the rest of the day, this has been pretty consistent as I have owned...

Great NAS, Enterprise Quality Features and Performance at Home. 10/10

Alex Alvanos, Amazon
29 June 2015
  • Summary: I've owned this Synology NAS for a while now and it is worth every penny. I put (2) 3 TB HDD's in it at RAID 1. I feel that my data is protected and I have a constant backup. It's also fast.
