Summary: So I spent all this money on a NAS with the hopes that number 1, it would be fast. However, I only am able to get about 2-3 MB/sec write speed. I get faster downloads from Itunes. I was reading in the Synology forums that perhaps previous versions of the Diskmanager software was faster, but those versions are unsupported. I also tried uploading some pictures from an external drive directly to the USB port and it has been 3 hours and it has only uploaded 13 GB.
Not a stable media server OR critical backup system. Bad product support. (Updated)

Summary: UPDATE (6/25/2012): It's even worse than my original review indicates. I've given up and have built a new media server (starting with a small "bare bones" SHUTTLE SH67H3 PC Barebone System case) and I'm harvesting the hard drives from the Synology system to use on that new Ubuntu Linux system. I'll be running XBMC (XBox Media Center -- a product not associated with Microsoft's XBox, BTW).
Didn't have it for 3 hours and it crashed and crashed
13 April 2012
Summary: Putting everything together was simple. The interface was fairly easily to set up, however no matter how much I worked on it to get it to work, the unit just crashed and crashed within 5 minutes of it being turned on. Spent 48 hours endlessly trying to fix it, but nothing. I could not recommend this unit for the life of me.
Summary: My DS212J worked fine for about a month and then it was no longer visible on the network. I went through all the basic trouble shooting steps (new hard drive on their compatible drives list, new network cable, different PC etc.) with no luck. All the lights are green (except the blue power button) and there is LAN activity indicated on the front, but there are no lights on at the LAN port. I suspect that the LAN is dead.
Summary: I am writing this in the vague hope that Synology read these reviews and fix the problem. And it is a massive problem. There is a major bug and that is that the device churns at 100% CPU for several days if not weeks to create thumbnails for all the photos. And without letting it churn away for days on end you can't view thumbnails of the photos on your devices. Search for "thumb.conf" in the synology forums and you'll find all the disgruntled clients.
Summary: I bought this because I wanted mirrored disk and a time capsule. Compared to Apples offering this was slightly more expensive for 3TB but I was happy in the knowledge that data is mirrored and therefore protected against loss. Unlike some users here complaining about performance and set up, I AM an IT expert and have good knowledge of larger disk systems from IBM and EMC.
Great product (I think) but customer support is terrible
24 April 2013
Summary: I was delighted when I first bought this (instructions are a bit rubbish and unhelpful but after managing to set this up it was great......for a week. I turned it off and when I turned it back on it told me that I had a degraded disk. Tried to contact customer support to help me resolve this. Can't find a telephone number so had to email. A week later I get a reply asking for more info.
Summary: This is more of a warning than a review, for reviews I would suggest looking at the DS212j on Amazon without any HDDs installed. I decided to buy the DS212j/6Tb rather than buy HDDs separately, even though it worked out slightly more expensive to do so, as I believed the HDDs would be those most suitable for use in this device. As always my order was seamless and it arrived the very next day.
