Summary: I ordered this NAS because of the positive reviews and was impressed with the features, which go much beyond just basic file sharing. The iPhone and iPad apps are very nice and I was even able to use the WebDav software to upload photos from my phone directly to the NAS. Additionally, the user interface is first rate and setup is easy. You can even get a unix prompt and hack away if desired. My chief complaint is related to encryption.
Summary: I decided to buy this NAS to replace my Netgear Stora, which I have been unhappy with since day 1 (slow, finnicky, Netgear requires a subscription for advanced features). Unfortunately the current firmware on the DS212 (DSM 4.0), judging from my experience with the device so far and confirmed by thousands of Synology forum postings, has severely crippled the device compared to the previous version 3.2.
Summary: I am sure this is an excellent product from all the 'expert' reviews I have read, but therein lies the problem myself and many others have discovered if the Synology Forum is anything to go by i.e. you need to be an 'expert' to benefit from this product, so it loses stars for me. It's really difficult to get set up and working across it's full range of capabilities, and I would consider myself above average when it comes to technology.
