Excerpt: It was really easy to setup and configure this storage. I started using it as a file server for photos and backup server for all family computers. I tested access speed and found it a bit disappointing over WiFi (10Mb/s) and write speed over Gigabit Ethernet (single link) topped at 100Mb/sec. It is a solid product. I like that it is expandable and has a lot of apps available.
Excerpt: Replacing a synology 712+ as a home file/media server. When I bought the 712+ a few years ago, the 5 bay version back then was not as quiet. With the 1513+, this is no longer a problem. It runs slightly noisier if you are right next to it but you can't hear anything a few feet away. It runs linux and with SSH enabled, you can log in and setup whatever service you want.
Summary: In this box I used 5 - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB 7200 RPM. They seem to be running consistently at 91 degrees which is cooler than my Windows server. The hybrid RAID feature is awesome. I can have 2 disks fail at the same time and my data is still safe. Built in remote administration is nice. Remote file access with WEBDav isn't too hard to setup either as long as you can get your router to forward the ports.
Pros: Faster than my Windows server. This is the second one of these I've setup. We're using them primarily as file servers. They run quiet and cool. Setup time only took about 30 minutes but it took all night to format the 5 - 2TB drives I put in. For a small business needing to share files and have central storage this thing is a no-brainer. It's small, clean, and simple.
Excerpt: I'm using this NAS with four 4TB HGST drives. I can't really vouche for reliability since I haven't had it for very long, but set up was a breeze using the Synology guide and once the drives were all loaded and initiated everythings been working great. This was my first NAS Server having come from a WHS2003 computer and I'm looking forward to seeing how well this holds up.
Excerpt: I switched from a FreeNAS server built out of old parts to this Synology DS1513+ because of the increase in simplicity and the decrease in footprint and energy expenditure. The support and reputation convinced me to try it, and I am extremely glad that I did. This thing is much faster and far more convenient than my old solution. The only thing I miss is the snapshot feature from FreeNAS's zfs implementation.
Pros: Compact, Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast
Excerpt: Painless setup, using it as an iSCSI datastore with VMWare ESXi 5.5u1 hosted on a 2012 MacMini. Whole thing including router/switch uses 67 watts! Speed is top notch. Temps are around 100-110*F w/Western digital Red's close to ambient. This thing has almost every service you could want. The download station app is somewhat lacking, but the rest works as expected. Best small/home office NAS around!
Pros: Compact, Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast, Highly Compatible, Power Saver, Runs Cool
Summary: I now have room for backups for my PCs & Servers.
Pros: I have only very good things to say about this unit. The packing was good, installing the 5 drives was very simple. Even getting the unit up and working was actually easier than I expected base on what others have said. This box does way more than I'm using it for. There are plenty of apps available beyond what I using.
Cons: Could be less expensive is the only negative thing I can say
Summary: We have tried many NAS devices, ie. WD, Seagate, & Buffalo Tech. This Synology is heads and shoulders above those offerings. Hopefully 10 years from now, I will be able to say I tried only these 4 brands of NAS. The other devices all had shortcomings. I haven't found 1 thing I would change with this device. It is very easy to use and setup and is extremely fast.
Excerpt: After weeks of review I decided on the Diskstation. After I received it I was able to be up and using it about as fast as any new device. Installing the fist disk was a little time consuming, after all I am a guy, instructions who needs instructions. After realizing the screws are only if you want to use 2.5 inch drives, the 3.5 inch just snap in it went well. Then to connect to the Diskstation from the network. Again the instructions said it would take several minutes.
Pros: Compact, Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast, Highly Compatible
