Summary: I purchase the Synology DS412+ to replace a home made NAS, running FreeNAS , that I have had for several years. The DSM software configured the NAS right out of the bow for the max capacity/best reliability. I am sure I will get in a tweak it once I get familar with the product. I would recommend it.
Pros: Compact, Quiet, Simple Setup out of the package, pretty good selection of applications.
Cons: Quick Start guide assumes you are an experienced NAS user.
Excerpt: The reviews on this unit are great. The Product itself is actually pretty good, considered I am a person who had no idea about servers/networking. The main thing that sold me about this product is the fact that you can store multiple drives in the unit, and incorporate the type of RAID system you would like to run while utilizing it.
Summary: I was drawn to Synology after several favorable reviews and decided to test for myself. No going back to others no matter how much of a cost difference. Supporting so many drive types and sizes is great but the real bonus is the software utilities that are built in as well as an open environment that allow developers to create add-ons, plus iOS apps is the best feature of all.
Excerpt: Expectations of a small NAS have to be tempered by realization of the inherent limitations in this kind of storage. The link between the computer and the NAS is one; Gigabit Ethernet has a line speed (and thus absolute speed limit) of 125 MB/sec. No matter how fast the computer and the NAS, this bottleneck imposes a constraint that cannot be exceeded. We compared the DS412+ to an older Seagate NAS440 in a simple test with compelling results.
Excerpt: I bought this particular unit because it met my needs and the manufacturer was highlighted on the Kelby training network. It was easy to setup and the instructions for basic use are very easy to follow. You can get into more in depth setup and use if you want but for me SHR system provided the best operation. I only gave it 4 stars because I've only been using it 2 weeks. I feel sure after I know more about it that rating will go up to 5 stars.
Pros: Compact, Easy To Manage, Easy To Set Up, Fast, Highly Compatible
The DS412+ is a reliable NAS with attractive features

Summary: 1. Although I had an infancy failure (which Amazon solved by providing a replacement product in 2 days flat) the unit works well. It is quiet in use. 2. The Synology Assistant software includes nice features including "packages". For example, I downloaded a package which enables me to use the DS412+ as a server for my Logitech Squeezebox music server. I also use a remote NAS as an offsite back up (also a Synology) and the software is well set up for such an operation.
Summary: *** 2014 MAR 23 *** 1) If you run across the hibernation problem (Google Synology hibernation), you may find that even a brief power recycle does not resolve the problem. We had to remove power for a substantial interval to restore function. 2) Synology has pushed two firmware updates to address critical security vulnerabilities. If your NAS is exposed to the internet, it is important to update firmware.
Summary: Bought this to replace a failing WHS 2011 setup and for file serving it's much easier. Compact, quiet with hot swappable drives and Synology Hybrid Raid that even I can set up. Lacks on the media server end, Microsoft media just worked for me when I was total Windows. With this Linux based NAS it just doesn't work well, Plex was not a pleasant experience and Synology's audio station, photo station and media need maturing. Trying XBMC not and it shows promise.
