Beware of Synology's bad customer support service
Keith M., Newegg
4 September 2014
Summary: I used to sing Synology praises but now I know better. As soon as they replace this unit, if they replace the unit, I am done with this company.
Pros: When the NAS unit works it's fantastic. That is unless you unplug it or it crashes on you forcing you to unplug or power cycle it. I'm really disappointed in Synology's support and the fact that I was sent a replacement that was bad after 3 weeks and now I"ll have to wait even longer.
Cons: Now I've had my DS412+ for little over a year and it's been great. That is until the unit experienced an issue 3 weeks ago that forced me to endure the entire weekend as Synology doesn't work on the weekend and then 3 more days of back and forth with them. They finally had me send the unit in for replacement even after I gave them provide of the issues via a video and my invoice (from Newegg), of course I had to pay. I finally got the new unit 2 days ago, so my entire...
Synology Made Guinea Pigs of Their Surveillance Station Customers
15 July 2014
Summary: I set up the DS412+ with 4 X 4TB drives on May 1, and it worked well till Synology updated their Surveillance Station software after version 6.2-3141 (released 4/21/2014). The updates after that version caused the Surveillance Station with my 9 IP cameras connected with 1GB Ethernet to incorrectly report that no videos were being recorded, when indeed they were listed in the File Station in the Surveillance Folder.
Summary: This would probably be a great device if I had gotten one with a functioning power brick. I had to wait a few days to set it up and when I plugged it in, nothing. very disappointed in the quality of the power brick.
Cons: volume crashed twice, HDDs are all fine but customer service struggled for 2 months to remotely revive the crashed volume and gave up. I had to manually backup the shares and recreate the volume. Recent experience with customer service for a few other friends I referred to this NAS was also horrible.
Summary: will update this review once the replacement arrives.
Pros: Newegg customer service issued RMA and expedited shipping with no hassles The unit itself looks pretty nice. Very easy to insert or remove drives, and no tools needed. If you are using 2.5 drives, you will need to use screws, but the 3.5 drives require no tools.
Cons: DOA. Looks like the power adapter may be the issue.
Summary: purchased unit, set it up, transferred my database from DS112 I had been using. DS412+ died overnight - blue blinking LED light - and nothing else . Ordered another one - same thing - synology tech support, very helpful, suggested I avoid this unit altogether - now wondering whether I should avoid the entire brand - data restore was useless - it restored every file that was ever in the disk (so I ended up with multiple versions of all of my files).
Pros: Great UI. Lots of great features beyond the typical network file server.
Cons: I wish I had done that Google search on "synology flashing blue light" before I purchased. Apparently Synology has a history of product issues with failures shortly after install. It worked for about 15 mins. After 15 mins, it dropped off the network, the power button (which has a blue light) started flashing. After that, nothing worked. After I did that Google search looking for a solution and found all the complaints about Synology support and the known issues with ...
Summary: After one month of operation, the DS412+ will periodically shutdown. System logs simply state "improper shutdown" and the device will begin consistency checks upon restart. Synology's customer support has been notified, and this case is in progress. This experience does not lead me to have high trust in the Synology system.
It failed after 6 months - Blue light blinking (doesnt turn ON), when it did no longer detect ALL my drives
2 April 2013
Summary: This is my second Synology NAS I purchased. The first one was a DS411j. The DS412+ on the other hand, was my second purchase and WAS happy with it..until it began to FAIL! After installing the latest DSM version (4.2-3202), I began having problems with the system partition. Then on a reboot, a BLUE LED blinking led light is shown. It was taking a long time to boot up so I went to bed.
Summary: Just received my DS412+ and I was very disappointed to find the unit is DOA. When I plugged in the power supply into my brand new Cyberpower UPS, the power supply initially showed me a green light. However, once I plugged the power supply into the NAS, the power supply began emitting a very faint beep and the green light turned off. I tested this on numerous outlets in the house, both with and without the UPS unit in between, to no avail.
