Synology Made Guinea Pigs of Their Surveillance Station Customers

Summary: I set up the DS412+ with 4 X 4TB drives on May 1, and it worked well till Synology updated their Surveillance Station software after version 6.2-3141 (released 4/21/2014). The updates after that version caused the Surveillance Station with my 9 IP cameras connected with 1GB Ethernet to incorrectly report that no videos were being recorded, when indeed they were listed in the File Station in the Surveillance Folder.
Summary: purchased unit, set it up, transferred my database from DS112 I had been using. DS412+ died overnight - blue blinking LED light - and nothing else . Ordered another one - same thing - synology tech support, very helpful, suggested I avoid this unit altogether - now wondering whether I should avoid the entire brand - data restore was useless - it restored every file that was ever in the disk (so I ended up with multiple versions of all of my files).
Summary: After one month of operation, the DS412+ will periodically shutdown. System logs simply state "improper shutdown" and the device will begin consistency checks upon restart. Synology's customer support has been notified, and this case is in progress. This experience does not lead me to have high trust in the Synology system.
Summary: Just received my DS412+ and I was very disappointed to find the unit is DOA. When I plugged in the power supply into my brand new Cyberpower UPS, the power supply initially showed me a green light. However, once I plugged the power supply into the NAS, the power supply began emitting a very faint beep and the green light turned off. I tested this on numerous outlets in the house, both with and without the UPS unit in between, to no avail.
It failed after 6 months - Blue light blinking (doesnt turn ON), when it did no longer detect ALL my drives

Summary: This is my second Synology NAS I purchased. The first one was a DS411j. The DS412+ on the other hand, was my second purchase and WAS happy with it..until it began to FAIL! After installing the latest DSM version (4.2-3202), I began having problems with the system partition. Then on a reboot, a BLUE LED blinking led light is shown. It was taking a long time to boot up so I went to bed.
Summary: Nice product, terrible support. The PSU died after 1 year and Synology support have been unresponsive. I could buy another but this costs £100 and I don't know if it will even fix the issue. I wish I would have spent the extra and gotten a QNAP instead as the they have a decent PSU rather than the external power brick these things have. Their support if you read around the forums appears on face value to be better than Synology's.
Summary: It looks good and I am sure it could be a good product, but it's not quite as simple as they make out to customise and after two months of trying to get UK customer support it's difficult to be positive about it. Sample email response from Synology UK: "We do not provide any time slots for remote access, we run a very busy support department and can not say how long individual cases will take.
Summary: SECURITY RISK There is problem with all Synology devices such that a software update can cause your NAS to be hijacked and all files encrypted by malware called 'Synolocker'. Despite knowing this problem, Synology prompted onwers to update their NAS management software and did not advise them of the known problem - you would have to know of the problem already or be a regular visitors to their support forum to find out about it.
No reliability. Terrible support from synology. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

Summary: I've had this product about a week. In that time, every single day I've come home to find a flashing blue light on the front of it, it's inaccessible via the network and I have to restore the firmware on it. EVERY DAY. You try and contact Synology via their support forms and they dont respond. For this amount of money it's shocking customer service. Utter dirge. It will be going back to Amazon.
Summary: The price premium for the company to supply this device with pre-installed hard-drives is too much. £505.96 with no drives, +£293.86 for 2tb, +£366.31 for 4tb and +£433.43 for 8tb. For not much more you can buy 4 - Seagate 3TB 3.5 inch 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA3 Hard Drive and the enclosure giving you 12tb for £957.92.
