Slow Remote Transfers
15 July 2013
Summary: I bought this unit for a small office setup. It has been reliable, quiet, and fast on my local network. However, it has been incredibly slow for remote transfers (about 200kb/s to 300kb/ instead of 60mb+ for local) despite my ultrafast $70/month isp connection. After working with Synology support (who were very responsive), verifying I have an approved drive, trying a variety of protocols (ftp, webdav, web interface, etc.
Summary: The packaging is good however the software is terrible. We were never able to get the disks to format. There are no diagnostics other than 'failed to format' and a link to insure you have installed drives that are 'Synology Tested' At this point, you are pretty much done. I would highly recommend you look at some other device that handles both 2.5 and 3.5 inch drives and that is a tad more 'intelligent' ... This device if tilted, the drives will fall out ..
Summary: My Diskstation slim has just failed, destroying the data held on it. All my files and music -nice What is the point of having a RAID array, supposedly having safe, redundant duplicates of the data, if the machines destroys all of them. I have had two NAS boxes fail now, and all they do is sit in a cupboard. My laptop computers, which I carry around, bump, drop, switch on and off all the time have never suffered a hard disk failure.
