[REVIEW] Synology DiskStation DS411, bang for bucks home NAS.
18 July 2011
Excerpt: For most companies, a network attached storage medium is an essential part of getting things shared across multiple users on multiple forms of devices. NAS units are just an essential part of any company’s storage needs.
Summary: The Synology DS411j is a great solution for what it’s intended for. If you’re looking for something that can be used as a download box, this is not it. This is meant to do much more and specifically for small offices. A market price of Rs. 25,000 (MRP Rs. 34,000) means that it isn’t exactly cheap. While it has a lot of features, it’s not as versatile as the QNAP TS-210 , which was a similar device we reviewed a few months back.
Summary: The Synology DS411+ is one of the most powerful Atom based NAS devices we have come across, the Intel Atom D510 seems perfectly suited for this kind of use. Given the specifications, the DS411+ performed as anticipated and proved to be a great quality product that we can highly recommend to anyone looking at a four bay NAS device for the home or small office.
Summary: Speaking of the hardware alone, the DiskStation 411+ NAS is fantastic. I cannot think of any issues one might have with the unit. It would take a serious number of users to fully tax the hardware; more people than you would typically find at the DS411+'s target market of small to medium-sized businesses. The only hardware feature I would like to see changed is swapping the dual 80mm fans for a single 120mm.
Pros: » Massive storage capability, » Great performance, » WebDAV is great feature for remotely accessing & modifying data, » Android apps for Audio, Photo, and Camera, » New user interface looks nice and works well
Cons: » New user interface could be improved, » Windows ACL needs tweaking for enterprise environments, » Still no domain user access to applications (Audio/Photo/Surveillance/WebDAV), » LDAP for user management/authentication - would allow other devices for user authentication, » Password Policy - enforce strong passwords on a workgroup environment (a must for internet, » View open/active files - the DSM admin can see who is currently working on what files, » Application P...
Excerpt: In terms of performance, Synology's DS411+ is tough to beat. Both read and write speeds are blazing fast and it can easily handle multiple, simultaneous file transfers. All in all, the unit is consistent with what I've come to expect from Synology – stable, intuitive, flexible, quiet, and easy to set up.
