My Year With The Synology DS411J

Summary: I have been using this device for close to a year now and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality and ease of use. As hard drives get bigger and bigger it's more important to have a backup solution on-site as well as have a place to store large media files.
Summary: I purchased four of exactly the same SATA 1.5 drives and configured this NAS with Synology's own RAID technology. This unit is behind our firewall so I can't speak to it's public face, but we have used the VPN (opening a port through our firewall) for my wife's business...
Summary: What can I say about this, the second synolgy NAS box I have purchased. They just work! Wonderfully! Though, with a few less features than my DS-409 (running like a champ, coming up on 2 years now), this little box is just as rock solid.
Summary: Not a lot to say except Brilliant. Evan more so for I T peeps. Excellent built in software and Web interface. Add drives and it sorts out the raid setup if you want it easy. You can manually set it up the way you want, if you want. Plug it in and set up your backup routine.
Summary: I had been using a Linkstation Quad for the previous year and decided to donate it to my mother for all of her storage needs. Having been thoroughly convinced that networked storage was the way to go I promptly look for a new one.
Summary: After much NAS research, settled on this device. Easy to install and configure the basics for networking, back-up, etc. Great software and clear user interface. Has the potential to do much more than I'm using it for, but it's delivering the goods so far.
Summary: Bought this three months ago and feel like I've only touched the surface of what it can do. Easily installed two (still leaving room for another two drives when needed). The DiskStation Manager interface makes setting things up relatively straightforward and gives you access to a fairly decent GUI.
