Love this little guy

Dwayne W., Newegg
21 April 2014
  • Pros: Great little NAS for home/small office use. I use it to store pictures, movies, and data at home. Easy to setup, fairly quiet, and nice interface. Much better throughput than the Buffalo that came out about the same time.
  • Cons: Nothing really significant.

Tremendous Value

JOANNA R., Newegg
27 July 2013
  • Summary: This has been one of the best computer equipment purchases I've made. I highly recommend the DS411j NAS for home use.
  • Pros: The DS411j has a fantastic range of features... On this one inexpensive box, we sink our backups, host all our documents, photos, videos, and music (well served by a pretty mature suite of iPhone apps). We use the CloudStation feature for automatic sync between our laptops, desktop computers and ...
  • Cons: For day-to-day home use, the DS411j has just enough power. It's a study in maximizing the value of computing resources. However, from time-to-time, the box can become loaded. For example, uploading photos kicks-off a thumbnail generation process that basically pegs the CPU and the machine is noti...

My Year With The Synology DS411J

Darren O'Neill, Amazon
2 October 2012
  • Summary: I have been using this device for close to a year now and have been pleasantly surprised with the quality and ease of use. As hard drives get bigger and bigger it's more important to have a backup solution on-site as well as have a place to store large media files.

Simply excellent

Rex K., Newegg
31 August 2012
  • Summary: The CD suggests that you can only load the DSM software under Windows and Mac, but you can in fact load the DSM software under Linux as the specifications indicate here. Just go to the Linux subdirectory and read the install file or run the install script. (You don't need to run the script.
  • Pros: Flexible, lots of options, easy to use, with nice interface. Almost everything you could want is as simple as a few clicks, at least for the basic features of a network storage device.
  • Cons: Instructions almost entirely neglected to specify how to find and install the software onto the NAS itself. It's incredibly simple: find the appropriate .pat file on your CD, if you have it, or go to the Synology download site and download the DSM software if not. Unfortunately, the two manuals e...

Best retail-user NAS, period!

Anonymous, Newegg
23 June 2012
  • Summary: There are some minor faults with the software, but they do not overshadow the greatness of this NAS. I shopped a lot of NAS devices, but Synology delivers the best for retail/home users. There is a functional demo of their DSM software on their main site.
  • Pros: Hardware RAID 1 GBps network interface Unparalleled ease-of-use software (DSM) Responsive technical support Simple setup for most applications Support for Windows ACLs
  • Cons: Indexing through Win7 does not work (cannot add shares to Win7 libraries), but you can index on the device. This is by design according to the forums. User home directories are browsable by any users (e.g. not locked down). DD-WRT support is minimal for router auto-configuration. Not a huge issue...

Completely Brilliant Product

Amazon Customer, Amazon
2 June 2012
  • Summary: I purchased four of exactly the same SATA 1.5 drives and configured this NAS with Synology's own RAID technology. This unit is behind our firewall so I can't speak to it's public face, but we have used the VPN (opening a port through our firewall) for my wife's business...

Excellent Home NAS

Jeremy B., Newegg
6 May 2012
  • Summary: Generally works very well, the cons are very minor in my mind.
  • Pros: Easy to manage, low power usage, very quiet. It provides the ability to login to a command line and make customizations. Has many software packages to add functionality.
  • Cons: DSM (OS) updates wipe out some customizations, but working within the management interface everything works great. Slightly underpowered for my use - I occasionally don't have the power to transcode files on the fly.

Great Product

Anonymous, Newegg
28 January 2012
  • Summary: I have 2x 2TB seagate drives in right now. One of them failed within the first week. I RMA'd to Seagate and put back in without any performance or data loss.
  • Pros: Great product. I use with windows, ps3 and have used against mobile phones (Apple and Android). No issues using stored files, movies, pictures and audio on multiple devices at the same time.
  • Cons: Locks up occasionally, not worth taking an egg because it is just that rare.

Extremely powerful NAS

Gregory S., Newegg
26 December 2011
  • Summary: For remote access, I'm running an FTP server and have it configured to work with my smart phones. It is connected to my UPS and will unmount the volume if the UPS gets low on battery. I've got security set up for myself and reduced access for guests.
  • Pros: For basic functions, it is quick and easy to set up. More complicated functions take a bit longer, but work as they are supposed to. The great thing about Synology's software is that you can even set up advanced functions with minimal effort. I couldn't be happier with my purchase.
  • Cons: Haven't found a con yet.
