Summary: There are so much positive things that can be said for the Synology NAS line including their support! They are feature rich and have an abundance of Apple and Android apps. This is the 2nd DS411+2 we have purchased. It is used as an off site backup for our 1st one to auto sync to anytime changes are made. My only compliant is the number of tested compatible drives is very limited, especially the >=3TB drives.
Summary: I bought this to backup our home computers and create a shared media server. This thing works great! Caveat for semi-non-technical people: For the hard drives you use, make sure to turn off the built-in power management on the hard drives per hard drive manufacturer documentation *before* installing them in the DS. Then use the DS' built-in power management.
Summary: I've been looking at getting a NAS for years and found all I needed in the this Synology product. I ordered the DS411+II and when it showed up it was DOA. The blue power light would flash 4 or 5 times and then the unit would power off. I contacted Synology tech support and they informed me that I needed a replacement unit. They're response was pretty fast as well. So, I contacted Amazon by phone and they sent a replacement, overnight.
Summary: i have lots of family pictures, family clips and music files. i used to have to do manual backup and moving files between pc/laptop/ipad and upload pictures to some online web sites. no more, this wonderful nas makes my life as a home IT technician much easier. thanx for a great product. the tech support (i have only contact them through email) are prompt and helpful.
Summary: INASIR have been using the Synology NAS For a few months now, and have only praise to report. The NAS software is very good, and extremely usable. The NAS itself is a speed daemon, I get approximately 110 mbps down and 90 mbps upload burst speeds on a CAT5a network. The average speed in my house with a mix of CAT5 and CAT5-a is 60 mbps. The best part is that I have this NAS acting as a download server.
Summary: UPDATE 10/29/2012: Unit has indeed been rock-solid and flawless and wonderful since I got the replacement mentioned in my initial review. Up to 5 stars. Very happy. I'll start with the bad news. The topmost bay in my DiskStation must be empty when I power the unit on, or it won't turn on at all. Once it's on, I then have to hotplug the hard drive into that bay. This problem first started occurring a few months after purchase.
Summary: I put this together to replace my venerable Synology CS407 with DSM 2.3 on it. I used the slowest, cheapest 3TB hard drives I could find -- some 5400 RPM Hitachis. The performance difference is amazing. I was never really unsatisfied with my CS407 (just ran out of space), but the DS411+II is three times as fast to read and write *while I am backing up my CS407 to it at its full speed*. Also, the DSM 3.2 software is a huge improvement.
Summary: I have had this Diskstation DS411+II for two months with Seagate Barracuda 2GB Green harddrives installed. After 4 months [Updated Review on Dec 2011], it is still running well. Even on the maximum "cool" mode, the DS411+II runs very quietly. I had also considered the DS1511+, but opted for this DS411+II since it was only for home use and did not need hot-swapping capability.
