Update: Still All Aces

Bruce H., Newegg
14 August 2012
  • Summary: While having a drive fail is always a hassle, it shouldn't count as a hit against this unit, as the drives are purchased separately.
  • Pros: Same as in my original review. plus: Disaster has been successfully prevented. I'm running a RAID 5 setup with 4 drives. DSM reported a problem with with drive #4 so I ran some tests and confirmed that the drive was indeed bad. I filled out an RMA request and had the new drive back from Newegg in...
  • Cons: Why is there is no option to leave this space blank?

Looking for great NAS? Stop!

DAVID S., Newegg
25 July 2012
  • Summary: Stop looking, get this one. get the best drives you can. check out the cnet review
  • Pros: All the features and apps, like AD integration actually WORK. It does everything that it is advertised to to and fast. Don't be drawn in by the dual net connections on other boxes, this one seems to move at the speed of the drives you put into it.
  • Cons: I do kinda wish it had an LCD screen for at fault checking, but i'm not really going to be looking at it anyway and the alert system is the best i have seen on any NAS.

Perfect for Small Business

Bruce H., Newegg
24 July 2012
  • Summary: I bought two of these and filled them with 1TB drives in RAID 5 and synced the shares in near real time. It's hard to beat that kind of data security for $2K. It is apparent that Synology and the programmers behind the DSM OS love what they do.
  • Pros: Tons of features, DSM is well organized, well documented, and well supported via extensive forums. Outperforms more expensive units that have fewer features. Priced great compared to other units/options. So very many options... I mean, a NAS with a built-in VPN client, are you kidding me?! FTP pe...
  • Cons: Some basic features should be there but aren't, such as automated backup from an external drive to the unit. As it is, you have to file copy manually, but you can automate a backup TO the external device. Not a deal breaker. For an OS that makes users/groups so easy, it should have more robust co...

Synology DiskStation DS411+II is awesome.....

LaBato, Amazon
7 April 2012
  • Summary: I've been looking at getting a NAS for years and found all I needed in the this Synology product. I ordered the DS411+II and when it showed up it was DOA. The blue power light would flash 4 or 5 times and then the unit would power off.

Great Product

Gerhard E., Newegg
14 March 2012
  • Summary: Here a few tricks to get all photo and video on the internet/intranet: (10GB in 10 min. :-)) Your photos get there automatically: http(s)://your_ip_or_domain/photo Create a folder with DS Assistant in photo dir (i.e. movies)...
  • Pros: All you want from a NAS, versatile and silent... Here a few tips: Use different HD's first time around, like old SATA. I used 80, 320 and 2x1TB, create more than 1 volume, use SHR 1 drive failover, don't use max space leave a few gigs so when you upgrade HD you can determine the size you want to add
  • Cons: Not really a con but to get your Audio via Internet you have to go to: http(s)://your_ip_or_domain/webman/index.cgi?launchApp=SYNO.SDS.AudioStation.Application

Great Server

Brian T., Newegg
17 February 2012
  • Pros: Setup was pretty fast. Using four WD 3 terabyte drives in raid 5 configuration. Total usable space is just over 8 terabytes. I'm using it for a home server. Would be great for a small office. You can setup for each account for max disk space, volume access, etc. Would be helpful if you knew a lit...
  • Cons: Flakey power supply. Would have a difficult time coming up. Consumer service via emai was great. Responded within 24 hrs. Used express shipping to sent out power supply. Other people have noted the power supply problem. I wish they would use a better supplier since having the server go down can b...

This NAS is amazing

James L., Newegg
31 January 2012
  • Pros: I've setup a Thecus NAS before and man this thing blows it away. In addition to the build quality and aesthetics being better, the software is what makes this NAS shine. They've created an entire OS for this thing and it literally does everything you can think of from media streaming, to http/ftp...
  • Cons: None that I can think of.

Fast, powerful and quiet

Ronald P., Newegg
24 October 2011
  • Summary: I bought this to replace an aging HP MediaSmart EX485 Windows Home Server. Works great, quiet and small footprint. I probably didn't need this model but I wanted the extra horsepower to future-proof.
  • Pros: This is more like a server and not a NAS. The DSM operating system has a ton of functionality. Running 4x2GB HITACHI Deskstar 7K3000 HDS723020BLA642 in RAID 5. Using this to backup all my music, photos and desktops (TimeMachine on OSX Lion and Using Symantec System Recovery 2011 for my W7 Machine...

Very Good Product

Jonathan O., Newegg
21 October 2011
  • Summary: installed 4 2tb WD RE4 refurbished drives with 1 extra bought as a spare when newegg had them for around 100 Ea Very happy got a total of 5.8TB total with protection.
  • Pros: Very happy works as advertised even if watching movies on an iPhone is a bit difficult. Great product and works with icloud and os 5.0 Backups.
  • Cons: Had to buy from someone else as newegg stopped carrying this product for a short period. Also 1st suffered a massive crash during a firmware update and toasted itself (data on drives survived) took about 2 weeks to get an advance RMA from Synology. However synology sent me a new one due to no Ref...

Blazing fast

Grant A. Bugher, Amazon
26 September 2011
  • Summary: I put this together to replace my venerable Synology CS407 with DSM 2.3 on it. I used the slowest, cheapest 3TB hard drives I could find -- some 5400 RPM Hitachis. The performance difference is amazing.
