Summary: As this unit is discontinued I doubt many people will read this, but get a NAS with RAID for all your photos, movies, music, files, etc! It is not worth losing cherished data such as kids photos & movies to a disk failure.
Pros: Bought a DS410 nearly 2 years ago for home network backup protection and it worked flawlessly for 1 year, 10 months. (the operating GUI interface has come a long way!) One day last week, the NAS would not boot at all. Synology tech support was prompt and walked me through so troubleshooting but s...
Cons: Good Guy DS410, had the grace to fail just before the warranty period expired.
Summary: The first unit I received from Amazon was defective... However, Amazon fixed the whole thing and I had a new unit in 48 hours. These things happen, not a problem. I've had the replaced unit for nearly 2 years now.
Summary: Did the research, compared results, and made the purchase. Of course, ordering from Amazon was the usual ho hum experience. Place the order, get exactly what you ordered on time, no drama. The Synology DiskStation DS410 for my purposes has been nothing but phenomenal.
Summary: This NAS should be used as a PERMANENT disk server. Moving around any type of 'computer' will probably cause damage. Come on! It's a NAS. Why buy it if you're going to box it up and shelve it? Pathetic. Don't people know that TIME causes things to go from ORDER to Dis-ORDER? Even sitting in a box.
Pros: Small form factor. Updated soft/firmware for larger drives 3TB+ drives. Never failed after 6 months of ALWAYS on and heavy use. 50-70+MB/sec transfers over 1GB lan. Nice! Can be used as a server for almost anything you'd want. 4x2TB Raid 5 setup. Just about 2 hours to create the volume. Rock soli...
Cons: People who don't understand what they're getting are lame. Before posting negative reviews try doing your homework and see what it is you NEED before you get what you WANT. Why? Because the two are mutually exclusive! See Other thoughts. Pulling the data cable from you NAS or any other disk syste...
Summary: I set this up about 10 months ago, setup all the backups to go to this and honestly completely forgot about it! I set it up to notify me upon some sort of hardware failure, and my backups are set to notify me of any failure/incomplete backups.....I haven't had a single one.
Pros: Easy to setup and configure, reliable and quick. Works great in an Active Directory setup, easy to create folder shares and apply custom security
Summary: I purchased my Synology DiskStation DS410 a year ago for my business and it has proven to be a well built solid product used nearly every day for all our digital storage needs. In fact, we have stopped saving files to our local computer hard drives and now store everything on the network.
Summary: I was debating to purchase an Iomega or Netgear NAS and during my research I found the DS410. I was very specific to my needs but when I compared the 3 units the Synology DS410 kick-a55! EASY setup. My wife love browsing all our family pictures via Ipad application and android.
Summary: I would recommend visiting: http://www.synology.com/support/compatibility.php?lang=enu This is a compatibility list of hard drives, UPS systems, and etc.
Pros: Easy setup. The quick setup guide is easy to understand and informs the user on how to insert the hard drives. The quick setup guide then references the user to the CD-ROM setup guide. Very easy to follow all of this. The Synology program guides you through creating a volume and then the hard dri...
Cons: I would like to have more detailed stats on transfer rates and what not on the actual disks themselves. The unit gives stats on it's CPU, memory, and LAN usage.
Summary: First, to get the DS410 to work with 3TB drives (assuming yours is shipped with the older DSM 2.3 software) you need to install a smaller supported drive and proceed with the installation to the point where the latest DSM software (version 3.1-1742 when this was written) has been installed.
Pros: My Synology DS410 works well with four Western Digital WD30EZRSDTL 3TB drives in a RAID5 configuration. The device is very well constructed, despite comments to the contrary in a recent review. The Synology Assistant and DiskStation Manager (DSM) software is also very good and provides way more f...
Cons: It is expensive, but you get what you pay for. The only real negative was encountered during installation. The DS410 was shipped with DSM 2.3 software which didn't work with 3TB drives. More about this in "Other Thoughts". If I could take off 1/2 of an egg for this, I would.
