Summary: I bought an Amazon refurbished DS213+ for only a few dollars more that for a DS213j unit with no problems. I coupled this with two 4TB WD Red drives and an APC BE550G uninterrupted power supply. Setup was simple for anyone who can work their way through software to create shared network folders. I didn't create any web entities -- just in-house network storage.
Summary: I have been using this NAS for over a year. It works great for what we use it for which is mainly pictures and file storage. I have played with most of the apps and they all work OK. Photostation is great for putting pictures and sharing with family and friends while being backed up on the NAS. The mobile apps work good on both iOS and Andriod, however they are slightly different and have different features between the two OS's.
Summary: Easy to install and set up. Great apps! Very versatile: from media server to backup to surveillance. Tip: keep Synology assistant installed on your computer for quick connection and use the latest DS manager software (5 or higher) for easier access across the Internet. Download all the synology ds apps for your tablet or phone. They work well if you create a quick connect name on your disk station. Highly recommended for new and experienced NAS users.
Summary: This has worked out really well. I probably bought a more beefy unity than I needed, but I've been quite happy overall. For its role as a NAS, it has been flawless. I'm able to connect via multiple protocols from both inside my house and from the Internet (Synology hosts a Dynamic DNS service that is well integrated and works great). It also hosts my Time Machine backups very well.
Summary: I love the feature-rich content of this drive and how simple the setup was. It uses a Linux-based OS so it's requires little memory while turning out the performance you need to access, backup and stream video files. While it has the ability to setup VPN for remote networking from home-to-business, That process can be tedious to implement. Instead, for common users, I recommend using the Synology Cloud Station.
Summary: We purchased this to work with 2x WD30EFRX Western Digital 3TB Hard Drives and had this server set up and running for an office of ~20 people in about an hour. Oh, and with no IT experience! There are countless features on here, and I only wish I could use all of them.
