Summary: This is one of the best investments i have ever made... I can't recommend it enough.. It's my Family Cloud (I am in love with the CouldStation app - We use it to (securely) sync our data on all our PCs/Laptops/Android phones/Tabs) It's my [Plex] media server (all my pictures/Videos/Movies/Music are hosted here). It's my FTP server (hosts all my images/videos coming in from my remote surveillance cameras) It's my Torrent server..
Perfect for a replication target from your primary Synology
29 April 2014
Summary: I have a DS114 setup at the office as a file server. I use this device (w/ a 4TB WDD) as a replication target using the Synology "Shared Folder Sync" option and it works well. If any disaster strikes, I can simply grab this device and take it into the office and be back up and running much quicker than restoring data.
Summary: Synology is definitely the way to go when setting up a NAS for personal use. I've used a couple different brands over the years and found that Synology is the best quality for the price. This is the second Synology NAS I have purchased (I also have a DS214 2-Bay). I set this one up with a 1TB Western Digital NAS drive. There is a setup wizard for simple installation. I work in IT so I did some advanced setup as well, such as user accounts and quotas.

Summary: I can't say enough good things about my Synology that would trump any other positive reviews out there. Backups are easy, file management is easy, the additional services like the Surveillance Station, music/photo/video streaming, Amazon Glacier backups, and then some all make it a priceless NAS considering the importance of preserving home memories these days. It used to be that we keep pictures in a box and hope they don't discolor in the attic.
Summary: great NAS unit. I use the web services and remote file access. Both have worked perfectly for 2 months. Security setup for the web services is easy if your a linux guru (which I am) but I think if you don't know about Apache and .htaccess files, it will be a steep learning curve. This NAS has just about everything for everyone, but no need to feel you need to use all of it. Just use what works for you.
Best backup solution for small office, even better with latest DSM upgrades
28 March 2014
Summary: I have been moderately happy with my Synology diskstations for about 2 years. I have 2 of these that sync across my home network to back each other up. Setup is simple, adding extra functionality such as remote access VPN server, Dynamic DNS is incredibly easy. However, the cloud capabilities were lacking. I have used Amazon S3 offsite backup (expensive, but fast) and Glacier (slow & unreliable) for about 1 year.
Summary: I use this as a local backup solution as well as a way to share files with friends and family privately. The only time I've ever had to turn it off was to move it and to upgrade to my now 3TB HDD solution. It's up time would be 387 days otherwise. While there may be better/more functional NAS solutions, this is perfect for me. I can set up shares and remote login. I even host an intranet for the fun of it... it's perfect for testing websites before publishing them.
Summary: This is the second Synology NAS product I've bought. The build quality is quite good, setup is easy, their web GUI is easy to navigate, and the devices are extremely flexible. There are many Synology and third party software packages you can install through the web GUI. However, the best part (to me), is that the underlying OS is Linux and the console is accessible via SSH, so you can also build (or download binaries for) and install many open source software packages.
