Installation wasn't fun but works great

Summary: I reviewed several brands (WD, QNAP, Zyxel) before settling on Synology matched up with a WD 3TB Red hard drive. The chief reasons were the combination of options on the Synology vs the others (USB, available features, reliability, etc). Synology wasn't the cheapest but it wasn't the most expensive either. One big reason was the ease of installation I read about from so many others. Unfortunately, that one didn't pan out.
Summary: I was very happy with this NAS for a while until the Disk Station Manager 5.0 update came out. I also have a ds212j at another house that i'm more satisfied with. This NAS now takes forever to perform simple operations after the DSM 5.0 (The GUI, the management interface for the nas) was installed. Clicking control panel takes 10+ seconds to load. Logging in takes 7-8 seconds. These are both on the LAN so latency is not a problem.
Summary: This Synology unit is probably a five star from a features and functionality perspective, but the documentation and set up deserve about two stars. As a non computer geek, but a smart person, I found the set up to be frustrating, and continue to have difficulty using the unit as anything more than a basic back-up for our MACS (using time machine).
Summary: I installed this device in a Structured Media Enclosure in the back of a closet and used this to serve the three computers in my house. I have one folder for media (pictures, movies, music) and one encrypted folder (personal information). Because I put this in a narrow space, I definitely noticed how large this device was relative to the size of the HDD; there's a lot of empty space--this is probably not a big deal to most users though.
Pros: Good software Easy to use Easy to understand
Cons: Enclosure is very large and very empty Processor is slow Only 128MB RAM Setup diagnostics mislead me into thinking I had a problem with my network switch (the HDD was bad)
Summary: This storage device may be the best piece of NAS hardware around (I don't know for sure yet), but I had so much trouble installing and getting this unit up and running that I needlessly returned both a WD Red 2TB hard drive and this Synology DiskStation to Amazon (and received phenomenal support from them).
Summary: Firstly this product is a brilliant bit of kit for anyone who loves a good film but doesn't like dvd cases lying around. It works great (Although jumpy in parts-due to wireless connection)and allows me to view and store anything I want from anywhere I want. Unfortunately Amazon let me down, for the first time whilst using the company. I used amazon.co.uk, due to living in the UK. However upon opening my diskstation I realised that they had given me the european model.
