Underpowered -- too slow

Summary: I was very happy with this NAS for a while until the Disk Station Manager 5.0 update came out. I also have a ds212j at another house that i'm more satisfied with. This NAS now takes forever to perform simple operations after the DSM 5.0 (The GUI, the management interface for the nas) was installed. Clicking control panel takes 10+ seconds to load. Logging in takes 7-8 seconds. These are both on the LAN so latency is not a problem.
Summary: This Synology unit is probably a five star from a features and functionality perspective, but the documentation and set up deserve about two stars. As a non computer geek, but a smart person, I found the set up to be frustrating, and continue to have difficulty using the unit as anything more than a basic back-up for our MACS (using time machine).
Summary: I installed this device in a Structured Media Enclosure in the back of a closet and used this to serve the three computers in my house. I have one folder for media (pictures, movies, music) and one encrypted folder (personal information). Because I put this in a narrow space, I definitely noticed how large this device was relative to the size of the HDD; there's a lot of empty space--this is probably not a big deal to most users though.
Summary: This storage device may be the best piece of NAS hardware around (I don't know for sure yet), but I had so much trouble installing and getting this unit up and running that I needlessly returned both a WD Red 2TB hard drive and this Synology DiskStation to Amazon (and received phenomenal support from them).
