Pros: Can't say enough about Synology as this is my second one as an upgrade, Fast, Easy setup, easy upgrade migration between the two different nas's, did not lose one piece of data, love Synology!! Keep up the good work!!
Summary: A couple years back my main system crashed. I played around with the hard drive and was able to get about an hours worth of life back out of it to try and salvage everything I deemed important. I decided I would never face this again but I did not was to put private information out on someone cloud service regardless how much I was assured my information would be safe and private.
Pros: This NAS is small but very powerful. It has lots of great applications and does a great job organizing photos and streaming movies. It has an easy to use interface and account management is a breeze. You also get a free Synology web address that forwards to your device. So if you are someone like me who can't get a static IP address, you basically get a free one from Synology and every time your device boots up it will report back to Synology your current IP address a...
Cons: While I love new features and appreciate Synology quickly addressing issues, it seems like once a week there is some kind of patch or upgrade. It is a little over kill. I also wish there was more 3rd party apps available for this device. It has a lot of capability but very few 3rd party apps.
Summary: Upgraded to the DS713+ from my previous DS211j... for its transcoding capabilities, primarily... quite a difference (and no, before you misunderstand, the DS211j does NOT support transcoding .... the 713+ does... transcoding aside, the difference was in features, performance... the DSM 5.1 pkg for the 713+ is different than the same DSM 5.1 for the 211j... The DSM5.1 for the 713+ offers more features).
Super fast and expandable, best NAS line on the market

Summary: Absolutely the highest quality and easy to manage NAS on the market. I backed up a machine this week at over 150MB/second over Gigabit Ethernet network. The fastest speed of a USB 3.0 speed I've ever seen was 100MB/second, so this is impressive. These are not cheap, but IMHO are worth every penny if you require high speed backups.

Summary: Purchased this with a couple of Seagate 4TB NAS drives and setup as an iSCSI target to a Windows 2008 server for a client with approx. 15 users; works great. Was able to expand the drive capacity of the Windows server for archive files and backups as well as Exchange mailbox databases with good performance. Windows server is a VM on a VMWare host so it saved a lot of time and energy for additional volume storage. Did not have to touch VMWare.
Fantastic Box, more than enough features. It just works. Good small business options too.

Summary: Fantastic unit, you can void the warranty and upgrade to 4gb of ram which will help streaming performance. I went with this model because the atom processor allows it to do media encoding on the fly which is good if you plan to stream to your ipad or phone. This is the ram I installed. this upgrade is not for the feint of heart as access inside the unit is restricted.
Excerpt: I purchased this as an upgrade to the DS211j and the speed difference is amazing. Migrating was super simple - just transfer the hard drives and follow a few easy steps in the Disk Station Manager and voila. Shipping from B&H was fast and efficient - as always.
Summary: We buy these units for our customer locations. We have never seen one fail, they are highly configurable and reliable. Although they are not an enterprise device, if you use some common sense they fill that role pretty well. If you're buying one for your business, I highly suggest you buy two instead. That way you can run backup replication.
