Summary: Would recommend
Pros: The only problem I had in almost 3 years has been when a hard disk went bad -- it worked slow and then stopped. After reboot it works worked with a warning that one disk was bad. Not serious since I'm using Raid 1 (mirroring) and had two external backup drives connected. These disk get heavy use ...
Cons: Support is all by email but fairly fast and thorough.
Pros: Very Fast - died unexpectedly. Used in RAID 1 w/ WDD Black Caviar drives - Customer Services was Great!!! New unit arrived with credit card for guarantee. Swapping the drives was absolutely painless! I was sweating that part. No last data on drives. Returned bad unit and received notice of CC inf...
Cons: None - Things break - It is what happens when they do that matters.
Summary: I purchased a DS214 and a DS713+ for two of my clients to replace servers. The DS214 has been running for 2+ years without a problem and the DS713+ has been running for 8 months without issue. I really like the fact that the device goes into standby mode when not being used.
Pros: Reliable, affordable, easy to set up, runs applications
Cons: Would like to see more applications written for this device.
Pros: Can't say enough about Synology as this is my second one as an upgrade, Fast, Easy setup, easy upgrade migration between the two different nas's, did not lose one piece of data, love Synology!! Keep up the good work!!
Summary: A couple years back my main system crashed. I played around with the hard drive and was able to get about an hours worth of life back out of it to try and salvage everything I deemed important.
Pros: This NAS is small but very powerful. It has lots of great applications and does a great job organizing photos and streaming movies. It has an easy to use interface and account management is a breeze. You also get a free Synology web address that forwards to your device. So if you are someone like...
Cons: While I love new features and appreciate Synology quickly addressing issues, it seems like once a week there is some kind of patch or upgrade. It is a little over kill. I also wish there was more 3rd party apps available for this device. It has a lot of capability but very few 3rd party apps.
Fantastic Box, more than enough features. It just works. Good small business options too.

Summary: Fantastic unit, you can void the warranty and upgrade to 4gb of ram which will help streaming performance. I went with this model because the atom processor allows it to do media encoding on the fly which is good if you plan to stream to your ipad or phone. This is the ram I installed.
Summary: While I have a DS1512+ in my house for general NAS usage, I am using this DS713+ device solely for the Surveillance Station application deployed in a local fast food restaurant. So, this review will focus specifically on my experience using the Diskstation for a surveillance system.
Summary: I bought WD Cavier Black drives for the NAS initially and they ran very loud and hot all the time. It is best to use lower power drives or Raid recommended drives for the NAS
Pros: As some others have stated this thing just works. I can reliably assume that the NAS will be running for me to access when I am away from home, however, this does also mean you will need a reliable internet connection too. The number of features available with this NAS are many. So far I've setup...
Cons: Some less savvy users may have trouble getting the NAS accessible through the internet and getting certain features working.
Summary: Synology makes the best NAS devices. The DSM 5 is easy to use and full of features. Many apps are integrated. Easy backup target and very easy to backup to Amazon S3 and Glacier. Synology hybrid RAID allows you to mix HD sizes.
Summary: I'm a horrible geek, and I need space.. LOTS of space. This system is a great starting point for users with a large amount of data, or for small business/domain-based systems. The 713+ can be expanded, with an addon module (Synology DX213 or DX513 expansion units), giving you the option to balance...
