Summary: I have been using this now for about 3 months and found it will do more than I even expected. It was easy to set up and I have had a different brand before and it was great at the time by this Synology unit is better than any I have tried and read a lot of reviews and others just don't seem to have the ease of operations that this one has. I am now looking at an expansion unit so my wife's two computers can also back up to it.
Pros: I'm using this for a UPnP server and it does this function better than my DIY solution. Have streamed media on several different players, I now use it as the standard to beat when benchmarking other media servers.
Cons: Expensive, but then again I've spent days trying to get a cheap CentOS box to do the same thing and this took only an hour.
Cons: Will not stay on the windows network. Can connect to the web interface, but can't browse the folders sometimes. Have been working with tech support for 5 months and they finally gave me a firmware patch for my issue. It still didn't work. For $600 it should work flawlessly. I have a cheap LG that I have never had a problem with. Wish I would have bought one of those.
Cons: Unfortunately, customer service is severely lacking. If your problem requires more that restarting the DiskStation, you are out of luck. Their idea of customer service means response by email only. For whatever reason, my DS713+ and Cloud Station has a problem syncing Quickbooks files
Summary: Rating: 4.5 This was a pretty easy device to use & setup. The features such as the user interface and the plethora of bundled packages software that are supplied, are some of the best that I have seen and are updated on semi-regular basis. You do not need to pay extra for these services, except for the IP camera licenses.
