Cheap NAS, but a handful of downfalls

Cam A., Newegg
24 December 2015
  • Summary: Would not recommend this NAS to anybody. I bought it because it was a little cheaper than other available NAS', but the few dollars I saved wasn't worth all the headaches I've had with this unit.
  • Pros: This unit is cheaper than some other NAS' available on Newegg. That's the only real pro I can say about this unit.
  • Cons: -The NAS slows to a halt as soon as multiple users try to use it simultaneously, one user will be able to transfer files at about 30MB/s, while the other is limited to about 75KB/s. -Although this unit is advertised to have media server capabilities, the media server doesn't work correctly. In my...

Only Very Basic Features. Could be better with Firmware Updates

Jeffrey M., Newegg
29 August 2015
  • Summary: I was really hopeful that this NAS could be a low cost archiving and Media Server solution for my home. Due to the User Access Rights issues and lack of the availability of a Windows driver to read the XFS formatted drives in the event of the Unit failing, I'm hard pressed to recommend this device...
  • Pros: I've now had this unit for about a year. I haven't had any of the issue that some have reported like noise or over heating but I am using Laptop drives in the unit. At first, the unit wasn't the most reliable. Sometimes it would be available and other times not. Recently though, it has been avail...
  • Cons: Why I cant recommend this device Home Storage for family The KD20 is a Linux device and formats your hard drives for Linux (XFS Format). If the KD20 fails, the drives are not readable by a Windows device. This means that you either need to keep a Linux machine around so that you can mount this dr...

Great NAS... when it works

Bryan L Averett, Amazon
19 May 2014
  • Summary: I was very happy with the NAS for the first month: Easy setup, simple interface, with lots of options. I use it to backup my 5 computers on my home network and to centrally store documents so my laptop SSDs don't fill up daily.

Sleeping Beauty

Amazon Customer, Amazon
23 April 2014
  • Summary: When it is running, it works quite well with the idiosyncrasies others have reviewed. The problem I am having is that it goes to sleep and never wakes up. The Finder looks and returns empty to the search button. I have to power-cycle the unit to bring it back.

Get less than what you pay for

Bledar T., Newegg
16 February 2014
  • Pros: Its cheap
  • Cons: I own two MAC laptops running Mac OSX Mavericks and it takes forever to open folders in this NAS from the MAC's in the LAN. Those problems are not noticed in the Windows Machines or with my Synology NAS. I have an iTunes folder which is around 600 GB of music. iTunes in my MAC stopped recognizing...

Not reliable and extremely poor tech support

Max O., Newegg
8 February 2014
  • Pros: Very nice appearance and easy to setup.
  • Cons: I copied files to this device from two different Operating Systems....Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. The files copied to it from my Windows 8.1 device get marked as READ ONLY and I need to uncheck that option on the file if I want to delete it....otherwise I get access denied when trying to delete. W...

Very Cool - Then Overheats and becomes unresponsive

Gus F., Newegg
20 January 2014
  • Summary: I like it but it looks like it may be bricked
  • Pros: It is affordable when on a good sale. Easy to use for a NAS. Software included is good Upto 8TB Build in RAIDs
  • Cons: Overheats and becomes unresponsive. This will cause you to wait and wait and wait and then wait dome more. Only to have to force it down by unplugging it. Of course this puts ALL data at risk. Also this will change the IP and that will also become a headache. The help number is a joke. "We will c...

Not Good, Slower Than Expected

Edgar D., Newegg
22 December 2013
  • Summary: Great Design
  • Pros: Great price, transfer speed is somewhat slow at an average of 40MBps,
  • Cons: slow for booting, for drive recognition, slow for transfer, have to wait about 90 seconds to be able to open a folder while unit is in sleep mode. GUI is somewhat antiquate,

Bad choice for now

Jason S., Newegg
26 September 2013
  • Summary: Shuttle is a pretty huge company and support should not be this bad. Things and problems happen with any electronic device. A simple forum to let customers and techs exchange data and maybe even have their personal techs look and fix issues is the number one way customer support is done these days.
  • Pros: Its file sharing works. Not too bad on speed. Has simple interface
  • Cons: I had major issues getting my external hard drive mounted with the unit software. For those that are using NTFS, be advised that your drive has to be only one partition for the whole thing, MBR, primary disk. I had tried every other option including letting shuttle format. Nothing worked. Even tr...
